Jussie Smollett Interview & Live Performances

Jamal from EMPIRE (Jussie Smollett) interviewed with Big Tigger at BET’s Acoustically Speaking recently. We had the pleasure of capturing helpful tidbits from his interview as well as live performances off his debut album. Watch our video coverage to see him perform live “Catch Your Eye” featuring Swizz Beatz, “Ha Ha (I Love You)” and “Freedom”.

Of the many topics Jussie spoke about, one topic is a common parallel among many of the breakout artists I personally interview. That being the choice of going to a major label or being indie. We witnessed a variety of celebs answer this so eloquently including Betty Who and even Skyzoo. He talks about leaving Columbia Records- where his label mates included greats like Beyonce and Adele. “I don’t do well with red tape. And I’m trying to work on my patience level,” explains Smollett. It felt great initially, however, it ultimately wasn’t the right choice for him.

“It wasn’t right for me… that’s not to say it doesn’t work right for other people. Some people can navigate that joint… I couldn’t.”

He kept asking, “when am I gonna be able to release sum of my music,” hence the title of his debut album he released independently. He felt as if he had to hustle his own music rather than expressing himself artistically. He noted the team working directly with him were phenomenal, he didn’t gel well with top heads.

When asked what’s next for him… more music, acting, touring, a new album? He responded that he’s directing a lot more- recently directing an episode of Empire this past season. He started his own independent label, Music of Sound, and debuting his first signed acts- an all girl R&B group. Keep up with Jussie Smollett on his website and Instagram.
