For those new to Skyzoo’s music, here’s a general understanding of it and why its unique in this era of Hip Hop. It’s based on deep lyricism– riddled with double and even triple entendres. It’s based on storytelling. “It’s based on doing things as far as literature, as far as the way you rhyme, as far as being able to put words together a certain way that matter and make sense for now and later. You know I think nowadays a lot of the music is solely based on now. A lot of the music is… what works now, what’s hot now, how can we make sure we poppin’ and hot… that’s cool. Because I look for my music to do that. But at the same time I want my music to continue to live 5, 10, 20, 30 years from now- the way that we look back on music we grew up on. So my music is rooted in that. It’s a lyric lover’s dream- to sum it up in one sentence.” eloquently explains Skyzoo.

His seventh studio albums speaks on current times. It speaks about the state of black people, black culture, police brutality, stereotypes, racism and more. The lyricist delves deeper into these topics, whereas in the past he only lightly touched these topics. This is what separates it from prior albums, EPs and mixtapes.

In this Skyzoo interview the celebrity interviewer asks about his parents influence within his career path. His response is that it was vital in guiding him. He always sprinkles mentions of his parents and life lessons they thought him throughout his music. However, on this album he chose to highlight his father’s influence of a black man teaching a black boy necessary growing pains and experiences.

While touring for his own album, Skyzoo has been blessed to be added to Talib Kweli’s tour. Renée asked how was the experience with jumping on tracks with likewise dope lyricists such as him and others. He summarizes- it’s a privilege and an honor at the same breathe. It’s a healthy competitive sport as each other pushes one another for excellence- resulting in the best product for fans.

Alexus asks is there any advice to young artists that do not want to ride the fade wave of rap, that want to stay true to themselves and be a dope lyricist? He elaborates, “Remember that the music is a business first and foremost. It’s the business of selling music- it’s the music business. Love the music first! Because the moment you don’t love the music anymore and you’re only in it for a dollar. It’s the moment you begin to fail and lose your footing and your way. Always love the music and the craft. If you balance the two of those things out… you’ll be alright.”

Mr. FGR is a ghostwriter. He’s written songs for top artists, he’s written songs that hit top charts, even written songs you would think are not from his repertoire. His research starts with a conversation with the artist and from there he cultivates a masterpiece that sounds like the artists’ own words. Skyzoo also writes for film and television. One of his most recent works include the indie film Patti Cake$. He wore multiple hats on the film; as an associate producer, writer, a role on the piece as well as trained the lead actress how to rap.
