Warning… Spoilers below!
On The Resident Season 6 Episode 7 (Directed by Malcolm-Jamal Warner, who portrays Dr. AJ Austin) “The Chimera”, AJ tells Conrad that he sees the way Billie and Conrad look at each other and that maybe Conrad needs to make a hard decision.
Look of Love
Conrad and AJ are on the way to Georgia State Prison to meet up with Janaya. Janaya was AJ’s mom’s hospice nurse while Carol was passing away at AJ’s home. Janaya’s brother, Bobby, is serving a death sentence but needs medical attention and the prison isn’t providing it so she asks AJ for help.
Irving is showing Cade all the pictures from Kit and Randolph’s wedding when she stumbles upon a picture of Billie and Conrad slow-dancing together. Irving tries to blow it off by making jokes that even he danced with Conrad. Cade recognizes the look in Conrad’s eyes as he holds Billie in his arms.
AJ and Conrad arrive at the prison to examine Bobby. The prison doctor believes Bobby is faking his symptoms to try to postpone his death sentence. Bobby has a seizure and needs to be transported by ambulance to Chastain immediately.
Feuds
Devon is seeing a British woman, Claire, who is in America on vacation. When he tells her that she should have seen a doctor earlier, she laughs. She explains that in Europe they have free healthcare and they can’t afford to pay the American prices to stay healthy. Bobby arrives by ambulance, and the team starts working on him. When Kit and Randolph arrive to meet the Governor, they realize that he has called a press conference so he can be seen with Kit and Randolph.
Devon discovers that Claire has large kidney stones and needs a procedure to break them up. Claire and her partner, Aziz, are worried about the price but know her life is worth the cost.
Governor Mark Betz calls a meeting with Randolph and Kit. Kit is excited to finally meet the Governor so she can try to persuade him to not cut funding to Chastain. While meeting with Governor Mark Betz, Randolph and Kit accuse him of misappropriating government funds to use in his campaign to become Governor.
Enemies and Blackmail
The Governor abruptly ends the interview and storms away, vowing to end Randolph’s career. Cade confronts Conrad about slow-dancing with Billie. She asks him point-blank if he has feelings for Billie. He promises that they are just friends and that they share a bond because both of them lost Nic. Billy interrupts them, and the subject gets changed to Bobby’s test results. He has a carotid body tumor and needs surgery. With his execution date a year away, the team wonders if he should even attempt the surgery.
Governor Betz has a clandestine meeting with Donald, a scrub tech at Chastain. The Governor tells Donald that he needs someone on the inside working with Randolph to help prove that Randolph is incompetent. Donald is uncooperative until Governor Betz blackmails him into cooperation.
Randolph, Devon, and Padma are performing Claire’s kidney stone removal procedure. Afterward, Kit gives Aziz the hospital bill showing that their European insurance covered the majority of the American hospital bill. Claire starts developing complications in recovery.
Billie’s Got a Hot Date
Irving and Jessica discuss how Conrad was looking at Billie during Kit and Randolph’s wedding. Irving tells Jessica that if he ever caught her looking at another man like that, their relationship would be over. Donald interrupts them, asking Jessica to be placed in Randolph’s OR. Jessica reminds Donald that Randolph picks what techs are in his OR. She places him in Billie’s OR instead.
Dr. Irving questions Conrad about his feelings and relationship with Billie. Billie interrupts them and tells Conrad that she woke up after the wedding feeling emotionally confused. Conrad admits to feeling the same way, but when Billie asks him if he loves Cade, Conrad affirms that he does. Billie informs Conrad that she’s not confused about her feelings involving him. If Conrad loves Cade, then Billie cannot have feelings for Conrad.
Conrad walks away but turns around to tell Billie that he wants her to be happy. Dr. James Yamada, Chastain’s new cardiologist, unknowingly interrupts Conrad to introduce himself. James takes an immediate interest in Billie, inviting her out on a date to a very exclusive restaurant. Billie gives a lame excuse as to why she doesn’t have time to date until James catches her looking at Conrad. He apologizes to Billie, explaining that he didn’t know that she and Conrad were together. Embarrassed, Billie jumps on the offer of a date with James to draw attention away from her in Conrad’s unspoken feelings.
An Inside Man
Bobby’s blood work comes back, showing that he is a chimera. When he was 10, he got a bone marrow transplant from his best friend, and now his friend has committed murder. Bobby’s body took on his friend’s DNA, and Bobby has been in prison for a crime he didn’t commit!
When Jessica cannot assist Randolph, Donald gets a chance to scrub in and work in Randolph’s OR. Randolph is short with Donald and explains that he wants Jessica and expects Donald to be able to keep up at the same pace. Donald is nervous because even though he is trying to help Governor Betz destroy Randolph, he knows that Randolph is an all-around good man and doctor.
Claire’s surgery takes a turn for the worse, and Donald panics, watching a woman crash on the table. Leela and Randolph keep their cool and adapt so they can overcome it and try to save Claire’s life.
Now being able to prove that he is truly innocent, Bobby has a reason to live and refuses to let a cardioid body tumor end his life. He agrees to the surgery, but when Billie and AJ open his skull, they find the tumor is much larger and more serious than they presumed. They have one shot to save Bobby, and the procedure cannot take any longer than 20 minutes.
Revenge
Devon comforts Aziz while Randolph and Leela attempt to save Claire’s life. Donald watches how hard Randolph works to keep her alive even as she passes away. Now Donald has to look into Randolph’s heartbroken eyes, knowing he’s just there to try to destroy this man and his career.
Bobby’s tumor is too big, and time is running out. Cade and Conrad offer options to buy Billie and AJ more time to remove the tumor. Donald is conflicted after watching Claire pass away. He knows that the Governor will want to use this as proof that Randolph is incompetent, but Donald knows that Claire died because she avoided American hospitals because of the outrageous price it costs to receive medical attention in the United States.
Donald Informs Governor Betz about Claire’s death. The governor is super excited about the chance to take Randolph down and get revenge for Randolph embarrassing him during a press conference.
