The Humor Mill Comedy Awards is the first ceremony dedicated to honoring Black comics in over twenty years. It was such a pleasure to see so many funny people being gifted their flowers.
“I’m so glad there’s a show that’s honoring all these comedians that have gone unnoticed all these years,” says Ralph Farquhar. “Black comedians are the backbone of the industry, and that’s the truth. I’m glad I was thought of to receive the first Icon Award.”
“It’s a true blessing and an absolute honor to be recognized by my community and receive this award from my people,” says George Wallace.
One of the most powerful statements came from comedian Flame Monroe regarding inclusion in the industry, “Twenty years ago when I started in the industry there was no representation of trans people. In straight comedy clubs, I was invisible to them.” Flame continues by saying, “Now, I have earned and garnered the respect of my constituents. I don’t feel like the anomaly… that I don’t belong. I am a comedian just like everybody else.”
