Watch The Good Doctor Season 5 Episode 6 “One Heart”
Previously on The Good Doctor Season 5 Episode 5, Salen put a new algorithm in place to measure everyone’s performance. Dr. Shaun had some of the lowest scores and was obsessed with improving them. When working on a case, he encountered an Asian man who was the victim of a hate crime but was too humble to admit it. His injuries revealed he had a cancerous tumor in his head that needed immediate removal. However, if removed it would leave him paralyzed on one side of his body. His daughter had to make the decision for him.
Meanwhile, Dr. Lim cared for a patient who turned out to be Dr. Osma’s ex-girlfriend. Her exchanges with the woman led her to break up with Mateo. It seems Dr. Andrews and Salen are forming more than a professional relationship. Lea saw poor reviews about Shaun and decided to delete them from the database– hiding them from Shaun…
Warning… Spoilers below!
On The Good Doctor Season 5 Episode 6, Glassman was acclimated in Montana and playing in a competitive softball game and talking smack to another player until he was distracted by a familiar voice… it was Lea! She pleaded with him that Shaun needs him and he disagreed. She kept stalking him and admitted she modified Shaun’s scores. Glassman chastised her for the lack of ethics and encouraged her to return home and clean up her mess.
Let’s Make A Deal
Reznick approached Salen with a proposal to make the hospital profitable. She had a contact, Nira, who could bring in a large contract and she had a consult with the woman soon. However, if she closed the deal she leveraged full control of the clinic Glassman left behind. Reznick tested Nira’s ailments, however, the woman possibly was going blind.
Reznick consulted the woman about a surgery that can save 60% of her vision by removing the tumors behind her eyes. Reznick performed surgery on Nira but was only able to preserve half of her vision and apologized for it. Nira told her she didn’t need to apologize as she could have been dead had Reznick not caught the tumors.
Reznick’s guilt was deeper, however. Due to her ambition to win her deal with Salen, she chose the less expensive option- opting to save the hospital money…
Shaun & Park
Meanwhile in the ED, Shaun and Park caught a case of a patient, Brandon, who had a severe brain injury. Park was pessimistic the man would live, though Shaun was optimistic he could save the man. While in the OR, the team experienced a bit of complication, but he stabilized and his body entered into a coma.
Park called the mother of his young patient waiting to receive a heart, Ollie. His hope was to see if the boy could be a suitable match for a heart transplant. So they waited to see what would happen to Brandon.
Brandon’s father, Thomas, was an Army staffer and came to visit him. Dr. Wolke was his point of contact and he didn’t think Brandon would recover. The two had a heart-to-heart talk as Brandon’s father felt regret as they hadn’t spoken in two years. He was disappointed his son dropped out of the military and didn’t follow his steps. The case hit home with Wolke as he hadn’t spoken to his father in five years. Wolke’s father disowned him.
Risk Losing It All
While Park was examining Ollie, he suddenly fainted. Park sought Shaun to plead he allow his patient Ollie to have Brandon’s heart. Shaun grew angry, warning him of breaking the rules. Park begged him to reconsider as a friend yet Shaun made him go away threatening to report him for breaching the rules as a transplant surgeon.
Shaun and Wolke beat their brains about the problem. We then flashback to Shaun in college and how he and Glassman solved problems. It also gave him an epiphany on how to treat the man. They tried a technique that had a 1% chance of success- that was enough chance to satisfy Shaun. Though it wasn’t working and they would lose the organs.
Park confronted Shaun about his treatment plan as Brandon’s heart was surpassing a point for a healthy transplant- risking losing both patients!
We flashback to Shaun and Glassman again, and he came to the realization that it’s time to let go. Shaun bolted to Brandon’s father to convince him that they cannot save his son but can save his heart for donation. Thomas didn’t want to accept this as he had so much to say to his son he didn’t get to say when he was conscious.
Wolke convinced him to talk to him in his comatose state. Thomas said his tearful goodbye while Wolke overheard in the distance.
Ultimately, the team successfully transplanted Brandon’s heart to Ollie- giving the boy a second chance at life!
Thereafter, Salen gave Reznick Dr. Glassman’s former office. Telling her that she earned it.
Later on, Dr. Andrews and Salen met over drinks. Earlier, she shared with him about a doctor who played hardball with her. He was manipulative with the man- leading him back her way. They had a moment and retired to the bedroom…
Later on, Shaun and Wolke consulted with Thomas to share with him, 63 people received a part of Brandon’s organs from donation. The man was sad yet overly proud of his son.
Wolke went home to fish out the letter his father wrote him. He was so angry that he never read it. In doing so, it made him emotional.
One last flashback to Shaun and Glassman revealed an exercise that bonded them. Flash forward, Shaun tried to phone Glassman but to no avail. He then started that exercise by himself…
