Black women most definitely rock! And it’s been very evident in the major beauty pageants of 2019. Miss Universe (Zozibini Tunzi,) Miss World (Toni-Ann Singh,) Miss America (Nia Franklin,) Miss USA (Cheslie Kryst,) and Miss Teen USA (Kaliegh Garris) are all black women.
Recently, Zozibini Tunzi of South Africa was crowned Miss Universe. And she gave a moving speech about what beauty is to her:
“I grew up in a world where a woman who looks like me, with my kind of skin and my kind of hair, was never considered to be beautiful. I think it is time that that stops today.”
This is not the first time black women have won these respective pageants, however, it is the first time women of color have swept all competitions. We’re so proud of these ladies, their representation, and their causal awareness.
Update: added to the list is Toni-Ann Singh of Jamaica, who just won Miss World!
