‘Hair Love’ A Movie About Black Father’s Struggle To Do Daughter’s Hair Wins An Oscar

Hair Love is an animated short film about the struggles of a black father learning to do his daughter’s hair for the first time. The feature recently won an Oscar for Best Animated Film! It’s a heartfelt story. Check out the trailer here, however, we encourage you to watch the full movie above on Celebrity Myxer.

The director, Matthew A. Cherry (Executive Producer, “BlacKkKlansman”,) attended the Academy Awards with a special guest- Deandre Arnold, the youth wrestler who was unjustly targeted at a match and was made to cut is dreads on the spot in order to compete. As if a hair style made any difference in talent and ability. Anywhoo, the youngster tearfully cut his hair and dominated his opponent.

In Cherry’s speech at the Oscars, he shined awareness on the film industry for more inclusion for black films and filmmakers- especially in the animated category as cartoons are the first childhood movie exposure kids receive.

The makings of this film are just as interesting. In 2017, it started as Kickstarter campaign aiming for $75,000, however,  amassed nearly $300,000, making it the most highly-funded short film campaign in Kickstarter history. It went on to release in picture book format becoming a New York Times best-seller, and further collaboration with Sony Pictures Animation.

Many stars in Black Hollywood signed onto the project including voiceover by Issa Rae, and snagging co-executive producers Jordan Peele plus Yara & Keri Shahidi, as well as associate producer Gabrielle Union-Wade. Watch the film, you’ll love it! Tell us your thoughts about it in the comments below…
