Watch Chicago P.D. Season 9 Episode 5 “Burnside”
Previously on Chicago P.D. Season 9 Episode 4, Upton became an insomniac dealing with the weight of killing Roy and having to cover it up. It started to affect her next case as she started to miss signs she would have normally caught. The team worked on a case of a serial killer who kidnapped young boys and kept them in complete darkness. One boy got away, and the thread they pulled led them through an emotional rollercoaster. The case led Halstead to become suspicious of Voight. He ultimately found out Voight disposed of Roy’s body but learned that his new fiance pulled the trigger…
On Chicago P.D. Season 9 Episode 5, Atwater went to a bar with Ruzek and showed him the building he was interested in purchasing. It was in a bad neighborhood (located in Burnside) but he saw the potential in the area. When Ruzek left Atwater locked eyes with a woman. They hit it off and ended up sleeping together.
When they rose in the morning, he noticed she was a photographer who captured anti-police protests. She asked what he does and learning her sentiment he played coy. When he left her place he noticed a slew of police racing to a scene!
He jumped into action and went to the scene, discovering a man who was shot multiple times. He tried to help but was too late. It was a drive-by shooting at a drive-through.
When the team got to the scene they immediately worked it. Atwater spotted some nearby youth and got a thread to pull from the teen regarding a man named Hubbard. The team uncovered a social media video that possibly connected a motive. It seems a violence prevention advocate, Anthony Wiggins, was confronting Hubbard on the video.
Voight and Atwater went to visit Hubbard at his recording studio to chat. He claimed to have an alibi, which checked out. The team got the restaurant footage and the driver had a skully on that linked to a youth art program… the program was run by Celeste Nichols (the woman Atwater had a one-night stand with!) He pulled Ruzek to the side to ask that he question the woman because she doesn’t know he’s a cop.
Ruzek and Burgress questioned the woman and she seemed to recognize the driver but wouldn’t tell. They threatened her and managed to convince her to come to the station for an interview. She still remained adamant about not knowing who the kid was. When she left Atwater and Ruzek ran surveillance on her and overheard her calling someone to talk.
The team’s evidence was weak and Atwater finally confessed he knew the woman, and she didn’t know he was a cop. He offered to go undercover to gain more intel.
Atwater went to see the woman at her home (hiding a recording device.) She ranted about the issues of being Black in America. He connected with her in that sense. Her phone rang and he saw the number but she went into panic mode having to rush out of the place to save a kid. Atwater offered to come with her and she agreed.
They arrived at the abandoned house and the teen, Lewis, was scared- especially when he saw Atwater. Celeste vouched for the man. She asked if he was driving the car and he nobbed, yes. Celeste was torn about how to help the boy out of the mess. Atwater disabled the recording device which cut off the team listening outside.
Lewis confessed to knowing about the hit and disposing of the gun as he was being threatened to participate. Suddenly, the team raided the house and arrested them all!
Saving A Black Kid From The System
Atwater intercepted the boy and gave him advice. He told him to lawyer up and when questioned to tell his lawyer that he didn’t know where he was going. The boy asked why was he helping him. Atwater trusted Celeste’s judgment and knew he was a good kid.
While being interrogated he confessed his friend Eric pulled the trigger at the threats of Hubbard. Voight got suspicious of Atwater and asked him about the recording device malfunction. Atwater played it off. They mounted up to arrest Hubbard!
You Don’t Know Who You Are Yet!
Later on, while being interviewed about the details, Atwater was told that Lewis knew about the hit as they found messages. He lied to Atwater. He then learned that the 15-year old teen would be charged as an adult. Atwater tried to fight it but his hands were tied. He requested to ride along to take the youth to lockup.
When Lewis saw the prison gates he freaked out and confessed he lied and kept the gun. Suddenly, the squad car took fire and the boy took two bullets to the head! Atwater chased after the gunman who was Eric. The teen tossed the gun and Atwater tackled him. When he had Eric penned on the ground he yelled, “Why! Was it worth it! You don’t even know who you are yet!” Atwater was torn to pieces about losing two young Black men…
Voight went to have a talk with Atwater and understood why he tried to protect the boy. Atwater shared the fact that Lewis didn’t dump the gun and had an epiphany of where it could be. They search Celeste’s school and found the automatic weapon.
They confronted Hubbard in the interrogation room and informed him that partial prints were left on the automatic switch used to convert the handgun into an automatic machine gun.
Atwater went to visit Celeste afterward. She was torn and pissed about Lewis being killed in police custody- amongst two Black officers. She questioned the officer’s guilt and Atwater was about to come clean but she interrupted him. He didn’t tell her…
