On Chicago P.D. Season 9 Episode 11, Det. Atwater purchased that building in Burnside as he planned. He celebrated with Celeste, the woman he dated, and kept a fake identity with. She had one of her students paint him a portrait as a gift and he wanted him to paint it larger as a mural on his new building. Then he got a call to report.
A family overdosed on Fentynal and the bodies were piling up. Voight wanted the man in charge but Atwater was still working his way up while going undercover. Atwater met with his contact, Jimmy, although he sold drugs he had a good heart. They went to a drug buy and the dealers shorted him. When they got outside he was arrested and learned Atwater was a cop!
While interrogating Jimmy, he was faced with 60 years in prison. Jimmy was upset Atwater lied to him but they want his boss. He wanted him to become his confidential informant and he was forced to help.
The team was briefed about the next steps. Jimmy’s younger brother, Nando, was an aspiring MMA fighter and he was to meet his boss, Tovar, at a bar before the fight. K-town Kev (aka Det. Atwater) talked business with the man but he didn’t want to talk so soon. Jimmy got worried but Kev was cool.
Atwater lost sight of Jimmy when he watched Nando’s match and the C.I. got away. The detective went into the back office and was confronted by Tovar at gunpoint but he talked his way out of trouble. The team outside spotted Jimmy and went to snatch him up but he fled and jacked a car!
Voight called his confidential informant, Anna to help find Jimmy. Atwater received a call from Celeste to meet her student Bobby. Then he noticed the car Jimmy stole pulled up without plates and drove off.
The next day, Atwater learned Jimmy did drive by his building. Anna told Voight that Jimmy stole $75K from Tovar and he had a bounty on his head. Atwater suspected he was giving the money to his brother to run.
The team got a hit on his location and breached when they saw blood on the door. It was a massacre! Half a dozen dead men were on the floor. Nando was there, he was bloodied and got shot twice. He told Atwater he got two men and then he almost died in his arms…
Atwater confessed to Burgess that he saw Jimmy the night before but didn’t call it in. He also shared that he never told Celeste his true identity. Suddenly, Jimmy called Atwater wondering what happened to his brother. They traced his location.
Jimmy had Tovar in an abandoned warehouse on his knees at gunpoint and Atwater approached to talk him down. Atwater put his gun down and his hands up and told him that he was going to jail but if he listened to him it won’t be for murder. Jimmy pulled the trigger and shot him in the head in cold blood!
Atwater arrested him and pleaded with him asking why. Jimmy tried to convince him to say it was self-defense…
Burgess advised Atwater to be honest with Celeste. Jimmy told Voight it was self-defense. When he asked Atwater, he told his sergeant the truth… it was murder.
Later on, he went to visit her, distraught and showed her his badge, finally telling her that he was a cop. He should have told her. She wondered why he hid it. He was afraid she would have left him thinking she would have been done with him.
She rebutted she would have seen the real him because she cares so much about him. She kicked him out…
