House of the Dragon Season 1
Speculations & Everything We Know So Far

Game of Thrones, based on the best-selling book series “A Song Of Ice and Fire” by George R.R. Martin, was at one point the world’s most popular show. With mystery, political drama, adventure, and romance, the show was a cross-genre hit that resonated with millions of viewers.

The final season of GOT finished airing on HBO Max in May of 2019, and immediately fans began to speculate about what other stories could be told in the Game of Thrones universe. George R.R. Martin’s book series covered more than just the epic battle for the iron throne.

In October 2021, it was announced that another GOT series was in the works, a prequel to the original show. House of the Dragon will follow the Targaryen family 200 years before the events of GOT and is based on two of George R.R. Martin’s books, Fire & Blood and Dance of the Dragon.

House of the Dragon will explain and explore the events that led to the Targaryen civil war, which impacted Daenerys and her brother Viserys’s stories in Game of Thrones. While we don’t know exactly what will happen in the new series, we know where Daenerys and Viserys end up.

Release Date, Season Renewal, and Speculations

House of the Dragon officially has a release date. The show will air its first episode on August 21st (we’re assuming at 9 pm CT), so it seems like the Game of Thrones timeslot will stay the same. Subsequent episodes will air Sunday nights, for ten weeks until October 23rd, 2022.

There has been no official announcement for the renewal of House of the Dragon for a second season. Like most networks, HBO may choose to renew it depending on how well the show does in the first couple of weeks. However, if it’s half as good as GOT, chances are high for season two.

During the Game of Thrones run on HBO Max, the next season would be written while the current season aired. If showrunners and writers stick to that for House of the Dragon, we could be seeing a renewal announcement close to the premiere date in August.

Reportedly, House of the Dragon isn’t the only Game of Thrones spinoff in the works. While HBO has yet to comment, George R.R. Martin has mentioned several spinoffs on his personal blog, including a Jon Snow-centered series as well as a show centered on Princess Nymeria.

Who Will Be in House of the Dragon?

Casting for the show began in July of 2020. So far, 28 characters have been cast and reported by HBO Max, including Paddy Considine (The Third Day, Peaky Blinders) as King Viserys Targaryen and Matt Smith (Doctor Who, The Crown) as Prince Daemon Targaryen.

As well as  Emma D’Arcy (Truth Seekers, Mothering Sunday) as Princess and dragon rider Rhaenyra Targaryen. Another notable character is Sonoya Mizuno (Devs, Crazy Rich Asians) as Mysaria, the unlikely ally of Prince Daemon.

Rhys Ifans (Spider-Man: No Way Home, The Kings Man) is playing Otto Hightower, the hand of King Viserys, and Jefferson Hall (Devs, Vikings) will act as twins Tyland and Lord Jason Lannister. Check out the rest of the House of the Get the full cast list and character descriptions!

Will any Game of Thrones characters be in House of the Dragon?

While viewers might have had their hopes up for a familiar face in the cast, Fire and Blood and Dance of the Dragons take place hundreds of years before A Song of Ice and Fire. So it’s pretty unlikely that we’ll see anyone from the Game of Thrones universe in the new series.

Where can I watch House of the Dragon?

You can watch House of the Dragon on HBO and HBO Max! Plans start at $9.99 per month.

House of the Dragon Cast & Character Descriptions

King Viserys Targaryen Played by Paddy Considine on House of the Dragon releasing August 21, 2022

Paddy Considine as King Viserys Targaryen, chosen by the lords of Westeros to succeed the Old King, Jaehaerys Targaryen, at the Great Council at Harrenhal.  A warm, kind, and decent man, Viserys only wishes to carry forward his grandfather’s legacy. But good men do not necessarily make for great kings.

Prince Daemon Targaryen Played by Matt Smith

Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen, younger brother to King Viserys, and heir to the throne. A peerless warrior and a dragonrider, Daemon possesses the true blood of the dragon.  But it is said that whenever a Targaryen is born, the gods toss a coin in the air…

Alicent Hightower Played by Olivia Cooke

Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower, the daughter of Otto Hightower, the Hand of the King, and the most comely woman in the Seven Kingdoms. She was raised in the Red Keep, close to the king and his innermost circle; she possesses both a courtly grace and a keen political acumen.

Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen Played by Emma D’arcy

Emma D’Arcy as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, the king’s first-born child, she is of pure Valyrian blood, and she is a dragonrider. Many would say that Rhaenyra was born with everything… but she was not born a man.

Lord Corlys Velaryon The Sea Snake Played by Steve Toussaint

Steve Toussaint as Lord Corlys Velaryon, “The Sea Snake.” Lord of House Velaryon, a Valyrian bloodline as old as House Targaryen. As “The Sea Snake,” the most famed nautical adventurer in the history of Westeros, Lord Corlys built his house into a powerful seat that is even richer than the Lannisters and that claims the largest navy in the world.

Eve Best as Princess Rhaenys Targaryen, a dragonrider and wife to Lord Corlys Velaryon, “The Queen Who Never Was” was passed over as heir to the throne at the Great Council because the realm favored her cousin, Viserys, simply for being male.

Fabien Frankel as Ser Criston Cole, of Dornish descent, the common-born son of the steward to the Lord of Blackhaven.  Cole has no claim to land or titles; all he has to his name is his honor and his preternatural skill with a sword.

Sonoya Mizuno as Mysaria, who came to Westeros with nothing, sold more times than she can recall.  She could have wilted… but instead she rose to become the most trusted — and most unlikely — ally of Prince Daemon Targaryen, the heir to the throne.

Otto Hightower Played by Rhys Ifans

Rhys Ifans as Otto Hightower. The Hand of the King, Ser Otto loyally and faithfully serves both his king and his realm. As the Hand sees it, the greatest threat to the realm is the king’s brother, Daemon, and his position as heir to the throne.
