Black women had epic wins at the 2021 BET Awards! It was extremely appropriate as this year’s theme for the show was the “Year of the Black Woman.” Here are the highlights from the prestigious awards ceremony.
Queen Latifah tributes Black women and her mother when accepting her Lifetime Achievement Award at 2021 BET Awards
Queen Latifah was the biggest winner at the BET Awards. She received the “Lifetime Achievement Award” in recognition of her prolific career over the past 30 years, in which she remained one of the most versatile creatives of the time. She thanked her mother for pushing her and giving her the strength to be a pioneering female rapper. She also thanked her father, “who praised the Black woman!” She also went on to give special thanks to her long-time business partner, Shakim Compere. If it were not for him keeping his promise, guiding her, and keeping her safe in the industry- things may not be as fruitful.
Andra Day accepts Best Actress award at 2021 BET Awards
Andra Day had a remarkable, award-winning performance in the movie The United States vs. Billie Holiday. Andra portrayed iconic Billie Holiday who shed light on human rights issues with the U.S. government with her timeless song “Strange Fruit.” Day took home the “Best Actress” trophy at the BET Awards.
H.E.R. accepts Best Female R&B award at 2021 BET Awards
H.E.R. is on her way to an EGOT! Before the age of 24, she has amassed BET, Soul Train, iHeart, MTV, and Grammy awards. Not only can she sing but can play a variety of instruments. She won the “Best Female R&B Artist” award just minutes after performing onstage.
Megan Thee Stallion accepts Viewers Choice Award at 2021 BET Awards
Megan Thee Stallion just left the stage performing her new single “Thot Shit” and had to rush back between outfit changes to accept the “Viewer’s Choice” award on behalf of Cardi B and herself. Although, the swift moments may have not allowed her to thank Cardi for putting her on the track. She surely made up for it later!
Jazmine Sullivan accepts Album of the Year award at 2021 BET Awards
Jazmine Sullivan took home the “Album of the Year” award in a lineup of fierce contenders. Although she took more than a six-year hiatus from music, she understands her fans’ plight and promised more to come. That Heaux Tales album is everything and exactly what Black women needed to hear!
Megan Thee Stallion accepts Best Female Hip Hop Artist award at 2021 BET Awards
Megan Thee Stallion led the pack with nominations and ended up taking home the most trophies this year! She won “Best Collaboration,” “Viewer’s Choice,” “Video of the Year,” and also crowned the “Best Female Hip Hop Artist” award at 2021 BET Awards. When she returned to the stage to accept this award in a competitive category, she gave respect to Cardi B as well as her mentor, Beyonce for collabing with her on the track.
Black women are the strongest beings on this planet. So strong, resilient, passionate, and creative- it was wonderful to see representation by us for us!
