Syleena Johnson to some is best known for her Grammy-nominated vocals in Kanye West’s “All Falls Down” track from his The College Dropout disk. Others may know her from her hit single “I Am Your Woman” from her album Chapter 1: Love, Pain & Forgiveness. But this accomplished diva has expanded far beyond just music within her career thus far. Many watch her five days a week as a cohost on TV One’s Sister Circle. As one of four powerful women, she talks about relationships, parenting, fitness, and personal finances on the show.

She’s also starred on TV One’s “R&B Divas: Atlanta” and WE TV’s “Marriage Boot Camp: Reality Stars.” In 2018, Syleena added the title of author to her repertoire by releasing her well-received, self-help book, The Weight Is Over. The book follows Johnson’s compelling and triumphant journey toward self-love and discovery while chronicling her battle with body image birthed in adolescence and carried throughout her music career.

Syleena Johnson WOMAN Explores Emotions, Relationships & Current Issues

While listening to WOMAN, it explored many topics such as emotions, relationships, and current issues. Take the lead self-titled single. It addresses social injustices women face on a daily basis. Issues such as equal pay, me too, sexism, and double standards. In the music video, Johnson takes on a Black Panther Party-type lead- fist raised and chanting to an all-female crowd. In the chorus, she says, “you gotta think like a woman, and act harder than a man… love like a woman, but take advantage like a man… sacrifice like a woman, tell lies like a man.”

In her decode for the purpose of the song Syleena explains, “it’s dedicated to us and it’s about us, and yes, this song was birthed out of frustration. The frustration of what our legislation has caused in this country, of what we’ve been seeing men do to women.” The songstress adds, “How the whistle is being blown, on all the things that have been happening behind the scenes when it comes to disrespect. Diminishing us, sexually abusing us, preying on us… This song is called WOMAN.”

Out of respect for the artist, we could not add audio snippets of the music in our video as it was not released at the time of this publication. However, we were blessed to have Syleena’s earthy vocals sing some of the melodies. She explains in the track “I Deserve,” a woman deserves more than anything that has gone wrong in a relationship- even when it hurts the mate. As Johnson explains the lyrics of “Mountains,” she references her relationship with her husband. Further adding, if you’ve ever been or wanted to be loved unconditionally the bridge goes, “and I never knew a man could love me past myself, you love me deep like the oceans then take me higher than mountains!” Syleena Johnson collaborated with Q. Parker of 112 for the song “Home.” It’s a comforting song about a man taking on all of the woman’s worldly burdens when she comes home.

In our interview with Syleena, we asked what helps her sustain her longevity in the music industry. Her response was very inspiring for artists. In a nutshell, “I have faith my way through this thing… seriously.” She has a strong foundation of faith in God which helps her navigate.
