Exclusive Interview With Kenny Lattimore

Kenny Lattimore’s music career spanned more than two decades. He has garnered Grammy and Soul Train Award nominations. Add to that, he’s accumulated Top 10 singles (Michael Jordan even admitted to vibing to his music in The Last Dance documentary) and Top 20 R&B albums, plus an NAACP Image Award for Best New Artist. All while staying sincere about giving his heart and soul to communities through music via his charitable organization.

“Music, to me, is a conversation…”

When we asked him what keeps him relevant for so long, Kenny shared, “I think it’s a combination that I sing about Love, and love never goes out of style.” Lattimore goes on to elaborate artist longevity, “The idea of embracing collaboration because sound in music has changed over the years. I’ve made sure that I’ve kept young, innovative producers in my circle so they would push me to keep growing and creating so that I would reach the new adults.”

No knock to those legends who stick to their guns perse, yet, Kenny Lattimore chose to reinvent his sound over the years. He explains, “Music, to me, is a conversation. If that conversation is not happening between my audience and me then I think it breaks down just like any other relationship.” Furthermore, mentoring a young talented producer, Madicin, forged the idea to release the contemporary R&B album ‘Here To Stay’ rather than continuing his legacy sound.

Kenny has experienced his fair share of trials and tribulation in the music industry, sharing with us that he had been through 10 different record labels and has been blessed to emerge each time. He controlled his narrative. Again, collaboration and consecutive criticism helped him stay true to his journey.

“I sing about Love, and love never goes out of style.”

Of course, we cannot forget those huge hits he’s made including “Not Too Busy” and “For You,” a signature wedding song. He shared his friend Kenny Lira originally wrote the lyrics for his own wedding and gave it Lattimore to present with such an angelic voice.

The lyrics in the new album were inspired by his relationship with his beautiful wife Judge Faith Jenkins. He says, “I wanted every song be something I would say to her… for real.” Our personal favorite tracks off the album are “Pressure” and “Only Girl.”

Kenny Lattimore would love to tour live with Babyface. Possibly nicknaming the tour… “The Kenny’s.” Also, he would desire to collaborate with Jasmine Sullivan, Lucky Daye, Ro James, and venture outside the typical R&B realm in a collab with John Legend. How awesome would that be?!?

Kenny left us with a word of affirmation; to appreciate time in life and do things we have never done before to express love to those we love…
