Jolt Synopsis

From the outset, we are introduced to the character of Lindy (Kate Beckinsale), who was a troubled child. ‘When people do bad things, Lindy cannot control herself.’ The words of the narrator set up so aptly what is to come. Unlike short temper tantrums, Lindy has anything but that.

Her character was diagnosed with a neurological disorder that is borne out by fits of complete rage, often leading to murder. The only thing that can stop her from acting out of turn is an electrical impulse shot through her body by means of a device. The contraption has been tried and tested by Lindy’s psychiatrist Dr. Munchin (Stanley Tucci.)

Dr. Muchin, though, has his motives for helping Lindy. He views her more like a lab rat, whom he can carry out his life-long work on, through means of experimentation! But this is only a short-term solution. Lindy cannot control her rage until she meets Justin (Jai Courtney). The two get on so well, and so it becomes clear: The ‘answer to her problems is close human connection.’

They kiss, make love, and all seems well. Justin is even unperturbed by her self-confessed fits of wrath. But for all the hopes in the world, it ends in disaster. While waiting for her next date, Justin does something inconceivable. He fails to turn up. Something must be wrong.

‘Lindy never got the love she needed.’

It turns out he has been murdered. Having stomached what she never thought would be possible, Lindy takes the law into her own hands to track down Justin’s killer. Her problem is that she is the chief suspect. So, in an attempt to outdo the authorities, she must take on two of the case’s leading cops: Vicars (Bobby Cannavale) and Nevin (Laverne Cox).

The former is happy to give her the benefit of the doubt, with his only concern being that Lindy works with the authorities. Meanwhile, Nevin suspects that Lindy may have killed Justin and wants to bring her in for questioning. With no time to lose, Lindy goes on the run by outwitting them in a car chase. As for Vicars, he is hospitalized, wondering what to do with Lindy.

With Lindy firmly gone, she makes some serious headway into her mission. She forms ranks with a hacker and discovers that the last call made to Justin’s phone was from a man named Barry Kasparzki (Steven Osborne). Faced with the thought of avenging Justin’s killer, Lindy tracks him down.

But to talk to him is another matter. Once face to face, Barry agrees to talk to Lindy if she can take down three of his best men. As expected, she dismantles them with consummate ease. And yet, Barry is not a man of his word. He wants to be rid of Lindy. His attempts to have her shot end badly, as Barry becomes her victim of torture.

After electrocuting him to the point of cinder, he names billionaire Gareth Fizel (David Bradley) as Justin’s killer. In the meantime, the police are still on the hunt for Lindy. She still needs them, though, and hits up Vicars at the hospital to ask about the notorious Gareth. He advises her to stay away. Failing to heed his warning, she decides to pursue Gareth.

In doing so, she goes on the run from Nevin who tries to arrest her at the hospital. After Lindy attempts to find Gareth, she is captured by Gareth’s security guard Delacroix (Ori Pfeffer). She is offered the chance to leave if she never returns. She complies, but Gareth orders a hit on her to protect any link between him and Justin.

They attempt to blow her house up, but Lindsay discovers the ploy. She tampers with the bomb to set it off while she is in the presence of Vicars. Having blown up the apartment, Vicars realizes Lindy’s life is in danger and lets her do what she needs to do.

With the police (aside from Vicars) thinking Lindy is dead, she is given a free pass to take down Gareth. After going back to the place where she was nearly killed, she is knocked out by Delacroix. As he attempts to kill her once and for all, Lindy manages to break free from her torture chair.

She kills him before making her way to Gareth. With that moment finally realized, the plot takes a significant turn. Lindy finds Gareth dead, with Justin standing next to his body. So who is Justin? And is he in league with Lindy’s psychiatrist? Was this all a ploy for Lindy to take out Gareth and pin it on Lindy?

With justice still to be served, one way or another, Lindy must face jail time for interfering with police investigations. But with the film entering the latter stages, an old friend approaches Lindy to inform her of her destiny; a way for her to finally embrace her rage and takedown notorious killers.

As for her bond with Vicars, he seems more than a friendly policeman. An offer is made to take her on a date, and Lindy does not reject it. With the audience left to imagine what may happen, it is safe to say Lindy got her happy ending.
