This case is one of the first to receive swift action from public outcry. Which, historically took months for mainstream notoriety. It has also turned into one of the more violently-led protest efforts around the country. There were fires and riots in Minneapolis and even Los Angeles. Not that this behavior is excused, yet so many people are showing their disgust for law enforcement’s disregard of minority lives.

Here’s a glance at the major events to unfold in the case:

  • CBS reports Chauvin knew Floyd and had animosity against him over past grapples. This is now seen as premeditated murder.
  • Thomas Lane posted bail with funds gathered by a crowd funded site, which has now been taken down.
  • Derek Chauvin’s charges have been upgraded to second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter. A judge set an unconditional bail at $1.25 million or $1 million with conditions. The other three officers (Tou Thao, J. Alexander Kueng, and Thomas Lane) are charged with aiding and abetting Floyd’s death, plus held at $750,000 bond.
  • There has been a public outcry to defund police, shifting towards community-based help systems as data shows most 911 calls are for mental health and ETM services, rather than the need for armed officers.

  • Many devastated cities enact curfews.
  • The National Guard has been deployed in Minneapolis, a first in the state. Deployment in many other cities including Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Boston, and limited presence in Chicago.
  • Protests spawn nationwide.
  • U.S. Attorney and FBI will be conducting a “robust criminal investigation” into Floyd’s death.
  • Floyd’s family has retained the legal services of attorney Benjamin Crump.
  • Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey calls for officers to be charged. The Mayor even touted racism as a motive stating, “I am not a prosecutor but let me be clear, the arresting officer killed someone. He would be alive today if he were white.” Source CNN.
  • Four officers involved (including Derek Chauvin) were fired.

Chauvin had a history of violent overreactions on the force including brutality complaints, shootings, deadly car chases, and now murder. Yet this animal was allowed to continue on a police force where his hatred towards minorities spewed on for years. Here is a dark glimpse at Derek’s rap sheet:

We need all police departments to look at repeated violent and overzealous behaviors of cops with patterns like this and rid them of the force. They are ticking time bombs waiting to murder more unarmed black men.
