He was away from his wife, listening to music and the power went out. He checks other power sources and heard sounds. He immediately went for his gun and a flashlight. As he probed the home he found intruders and took them out one-by-one. He and the last one exchanged bullets into each other’s bodies. They both did not die. In agony, the henchmen escaped and John too mustered the last bit of energy to crawl to the bedroom and discover his wife and unborn child were murdered

In a whirlwind of bureaucracy, we learn that the CIA won’t pursue the murder further- calling it even. They claim they don’t want to risk national security as it could be connected to the Russians by proxy. The Lieutenant Commander shared intel with John but they did not know details about the man who got away.

‘Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse’ – John Kelly set a diplomats car ablaze

John returned to his police-taped home to find much of it demoed -walls and floors – as if someone was searching for something. But he retrieved his hidden go package. He plotted to get to the diplomat who cleared the passports of the men who killed his family. And in a brazen move, he separated diplomat Vaseliev from his security. He crashed a tow truck into his vehicle, set it on fire, and entered the car ablaze demanding answers. Before being killed the diplomat gave up a name, “Viktor Rykov.” Kelly exited the inferno car and surrendered.

The bureaucrats Ritter and Secretary Clay (Guy Pearce) plot to use Kelly’s commando attack to their advantage. John was tossed into a Russian-ruled prison and he needed out fast. He caused havoc on the guards coming for him. Just as more guards in riot gear approached, they were interrupted by U.S. Marshals giving John a get-out-of-jail-free card.

This freed him for a meet with Secretary Clay, Ritter, Greer, and the CIA Director. He told them he knew who the man was who killed his family. They were under the assumption that the man, Viktor Rykov, was dead. Kelly convinced them otherwise and wanted to join the team to extract him from Russia.

They were not sanctioned to enter Russia under military pretenses. So the op shifted to fly as a commercial airliner that was modified for SEALs to jump out of. However, that plan was thwarted when a Russian jetfighter gunned them out of the sky. They crash-landed in the water and John made the decision to swim into the detached and sinking section of the plane where their gear was. Miraculously, he managed to extract it right before drowning.

On land, the team came to a conclusion that Ritter set their plane up since he conveniently opted not to fly with them. They ended up tracking him down and confronted him at gunpoint. Rit claimed he didn’t sell them out and can help them get Rykov.

The adjoined team set up in a building across the street from Rykov. Kelly showed a high level of restraint though. John was so close to Rykov that he almost sniped the foe. He literally had Rykov in his sights from an adjacent building and his Commander gave him the look to stand down. However, when they actually went in to retrieve him, John closed off the rest of his team to hunt Viktor solo. Rykov killed his own men and drew Kelly to him. He was wired with explosives. Viktor spoke about the foes’ patriotism and ultimately detonated himself.

In their attempt to escape, one of the team members was hit with sniper fire. In their recovery of the soldier, they discover sniper fire was at every possible exit. Russian police arrive and the snipers took them out. It dawned upon them that his whole thing was possibly something of a larger plan. Russian mercenaries were found dead on American soil at Kelly’s home, and now Americans were killing Russians on their soil. This can spark a war…

They manage to find the snipers and take them out. However, the building was surrounded by cops. John cooked up a plan to distract the police while his team fled. Since he was considered a fugitive and felon, he could die there… not U.S. soldiers. That meant imminent war. John managed to fight his way down from the roof. Using a last-minute explosive helped him cause enough distraction to escape.

John got back to the team and they discussed the fiasco. They decided that John being a ghost could better serve their purpose of getting real answers.

Back in the States, John managed to kidnap Secretary Clay and make him confess why. The Secretary said it was to “unify the country.” Since the U.S. no longer had an enemy to fear and fight, it caused internal turmoil. His scheme would solve that problem…

On the drive of confession, John drove the two off a ledge and into a lake. He made Clay say her name (his slain wife’s name) before the car engulfed in water and he drowned. Kelly sat through it all and watched him perish underwater. But being a Frogman, he could hold his breath a long time and escaped the watery grave.

He leads everyone else to believe he was dead, and he truly became a ghost
