Previously on The Good Doctor Season 5 Episode 15, Doctor Andrews bonded with a dyslexic foster kid who was being abused at his group home. Shaun and the team treated a woman with an iron lung. They sought Lea’s help to repair her antiquated machinery. The team managed to convince the woman to perform a procedure that would allow her to transition out of the iron lung and into a cuirass.

Meanwhile, Dr. Allen and Lea had a breakthrough with their invention and sought Dr. Glassman’s help with VCs. However, he wanted to be a partner and offered advice that seem to come off as sexist. After a sensitivity pep talk, he relaxed his approach, yet the duo wanted him to stay on board.

The niece of the woman in the iron lung convinced Shaun and Lea to be participants in her new reality show about atypical couples. Ultimately, they agreed to be “reality show people.”

Warning… Spoilers below!

On The Good Doctor Season 5 Episode 16, a fully planned and paid-for wedding was the carrot on the stick for Shaun and Lea going onto the reality show documentary. Lea admitted to not being great at wedding planning and Shaun confessed he would have loved to see an autistic man like himself on television as a child. Thus, they agreed to the show.

The Shaun Show

Dr. Andrews used the opportunity to speak on camera about the rigorous residency program both Shaun and Dr. Park were in. The producer, Sophie, candidly asked Andrews about Shaun’s ability in the ED. Andrews admitted his hesitance for Shaun initially but he has proved to be a wonderful asset.

Suddenly, a pair of trauma patients came in; a woman with severe second-degree burns on her face and a firefighter who had a spinal injury. Shaun and Park split and handled the respective cases.

Shaun’s and his team performed surgery on his patient’s face and he froze. Andrews thought he was having his visions, yet it was the lights from the camera crews that dazed him. Sophie interviewed several surgeons about Shaun’s vision and they were described as his superpowers.

Meanwhile, Park’s patient experienced severe spinal injury and he had to break the bad news to the firefighter. The man refused the first option because he wanted to be restored to a condition to save lives. He identified with Park because he once was a cop (red and blue tend to bond). Park wrestled with the course of treatment, however.

Distracted

Shaun’s patient recovered and he was on camera treating her and she felt pain in her face despite being heavily medicated. He felt that her pain was a result of Dr. Allen’s mistake and confronted her on camera. Allen was devastated and triple-checked her work. She discovered she didn’t make a mistake.

Shaun reviewed the footage of the burn victim being admitted and she actually had third-degree burns and he admitted to the mistake on camera.

Shaun took the news to Dr. Glassman but was being hounded by the crew and shut them out. Shaun was adamant about being an attending and felt he was not privy to mistakes- especially since he was distracted by the camera crew. Glassman reassured him that he was human, he caught the mistake and got rid of the crew if they were too much of a distraction.

Reassurance

Lea felt that Sophie was exploiting his autism for ratings. Even worse… the mistake he made. Sophie visited Shaun and told him that she wouldn’t use any of the footage of his mistake and reassured him of the true purpose of why she was filming him.

Dr. Lim had been pushing Park to take the lead as attending on his case. After several attempts at an alternative surgery, he felt he couldn’t perform it successfully. So he approached Lim to ask her to perform the risky surgery. Something she performed dozens of times. However, that would put his position at risk.

Sophie visited the burn victim, who felt hideous because her daughter turned away at the sight of her. Sophie reassured the woman that she can be the energy that helps her daughter when life alienates her. Allen visited the woman’s daughter and gave her words of encouragement to eventually see her mother.

Fixing Mistakes

Lim lead the surgery on Park’s patient and he started to crash until they stabilized him. Lim wanted to shift course but Park decided to override. She passed the helm back to him to lead the surgery on his patient. Park and his team saved the firefighter’s life and he had to deliver the bad news to the man who was disappointed that he put his trust in Park.

Shaun wouldn’t allow Sophie’s crew into the surgery so he can stay focused. Shaun and Allen performed another surgery on the woman’s face and he had his visions to preserve more healthy tissue to help restore her face. Afterward, he told Sohpie to use the footage with the mistake, even great surgeons can make a mistake and be inspirational.

Shaun and his team improved the woman’s face and her daughter returned. This time she wasn’t frightened and recognized her mother’s eyes and warmed to her.

Dr. Reznick gave Park the good news that he passed his test as an attending.

Lea finally agreed to speak honestly on camera about initially not wanting to date Shaun with his ASD. Now it was time for the surprise…
