Warning… spoilers below!

On The Blacklist Season 9 Episode 5, a man named Stan was driving to the motel where Olivia was and he nervously spoke with her on the phone. A mysterious man with a device down the road tracked him and activated it causing the electric signals in the car and his phone to go haywire- it also made his nose bleed and seemed to affect his brain. Stan spotted the man with the device and his van was flickering light. Stan reversed the car, only to crash into the side road. The man limped to Stan’s car to grab his phone and gain the location of the motel- Stan had died!

Trust

Agent Alina Park and Peter were en route to her oncology appointment due to her blood work returning cancerous results. She still hadn’t told her husband that she returned as a field agent with The Blacklist taskforce. He still thinks she is a field agent trainer. When he dropped her off, he professed his trust for her yet she went the opposite direction of the clinic.

Dembe went to visit Reddington at his request and briefly spoke with Mierce (his personal witch healer.) She confided in Dembe that Red was troubled as an associate won’t deal with him because Dembe had flipped sides to law enforcement. They spoke of a mysterious directed energy weapon and one went missing.

Dembe took the intel back to the task force. This fierce weapon can penetrate walls and create a new form of guerilla warfare. They investigated the missing chief engineer, his name is Dr. Benjamin T. Okara… the mystery man who killed Stan! They suspected he went rouge to sell the device on the black market. Time to track him down!

Ressler and Park went to question a CIA bureaucrat associated with the device only to be stonewalled and he left for a meeting. However, his assistant shared details about the missing device and the scientists who worked on it. Seems the entire team had gone missing while Stan was confirmed to be dead from a car crash. Meanwhile, Okara found Olivia at the motel and used the device on her to murder her!

Uncertain

Copper phoned his wife and informed her that the ballistics confirmed his gun indeed shot her former lover, Doug. She was in disbelief and made excuses on his behalf. He told her that he went to the police station to confess but couldn’t remember anything to confess to. He submitted his blood for private testing to see if he was drugged. Until he has answers, he’s not admitting anything.

The team got intel on all of the missing scientists on Okara’s team and were baffled why would he use the device on one of them if his intentions were to sell the device on the black market. Dembe suspected it was to make himself the exclusive knowledgable person and demonstrate its capabilities to the buyer. The team got a hit for a possible location for Olivia.

Let’s Make A Deal

Reddington ultimately met with the associate, Jovanovich, and explained Dembe’s shift won’t affect their business. One of Jovanovich’s lieutenant’s wanted assurances- they wanted him to kill Dembe. Red refuted that idea and bluntly told the goon how stupid that would be. The man took offense and sought to draw a weapon on Reddington but Weecha drew faster than lightning on the men before they could get to their holsters! It calmed the meeting for Red to offer his proposal for the man’s consideration. He also heeded him the warning, “If anything needs to happen to Dembe… good or bad, I will be the one doing it!”

Desert. Ash. Beware.

Okara entered Olivia’s motel room and found a note in her hand which said, “/// Desert. Ash. Beware.” This is what the man on the phone said to her right before Okara arrived. Suddenly, Ressler and Park arrived and Okara fled out the window unnoticed. Ressler found the notepad which can reveal the note Olivia wrote.

Meanwhile, Cooper got a call from a detective inquiring about the murder of his wife’s former lover! The team figured out the code on the message were symbols to plug into an online app that could reveal a location. Suddenly, the detective arrived at the task force headquarters to speak with Cooper.

Turns out he met the detective briefly at the crime scene when Cooper drove by and inquired about the matter. Cooper volunteered that he and Doug used to be neighbors and that he and his wife had an affair 8 years ago. The detective asked for his whereabouts that night. Cooper lied and told the man he was home with his wife.

In Or Out?

Dembe and Park visited the address from the note. Okara was already there and seemed to suffer from uncontrollable shaking. The FBI agents met with a man, Haans. He was expecting Olivia but learned of her demise. Haans gave them more background on Okara. Seems he was a part of the research team as a smaller device was used on him in Cuba. He suffered from tremors and light sensitivity. They tried to figure out why he would build a larger device only to steal it and use it against the remaining scientists.

They asked about the wire Haans hung (it was similar to what they found in Olivia’s hotel.) He explained it was their version of an early detection system if the device were to be used on them. The agents advised to take Haans into custody but he didn’t want to come in without the remaining scientists Natesh and Maryann.

Dembe stepped away to take a call and while Park’s back was turned, Haans cracked her upside the head with a bottle and fled. Meanwhile, Okara sought to use the device and caught Haans alone, and fried his brain. Park got close to him and suffered some of the effects but didn’t die. Dembe needed urgent air transport and called on his dark ties in Reddington’s organization…

While Dembe was in the hospital watching over Park in the ICU, Reddington called him with an ultimatum about their dealings together. Either he’s in or he’s out! Soon after, Cooper called Red with intel about Okara’s financial tracings and informed him about a man. Red knew him as Sherwin Ellis and he provided safe haven for those who could afford it. Suddenly, Copper’s wife called him to ask if he wanted her to lie to the police and he confirmed it!

Mass Oppression

Meanwhile, Reddington had already planned to meet with Sherwin. He stonewalled Red initially until he revealed his tattoo telling the man he was The Skinner. He demanded Okara’s address and he obliged. The address was passed to the FBI.

The team arrived at Okara’s location and found him inside the van yet he had a detonator in his hand. He ordered the agents back and exited the vehicle. They tried to talk him down but he monologues them about his mission. He claimed to destroy the weapon that can be used for mass oppression. When it’s not set on death mode, it can wipe the memory of the target. He claimed the government can use it against protestors and he needed to destroy it and anyone who could reproduce it! He then detonated the van killing himself and destroying the weapon

Reddington hired an interrogator to gain information from Jovanovich’s lieutenant and he revealed they were going to murder Dembe. Weecha advised Red that he was breaking his own rules, sticking his neck out to protect Dembe would put his life in danger. And she cannot protect him if he won’t protect himself. Red and Weecha learned that Jovanovich had discovered Dembe’s home address.

When Dembe returned home he immediately was on edge, drawing his gun. He searched his house and found a man with a bullet in his head. Reddington and Weecha were there. Red explained he broke the rules for Dembe and needed the favor returned. Reddington wanted Dembe to kill Jovanovich for him… but he declined.

Redundant Protocols

Ressler was pissed and took his findings back to the CIA bureaucrat who had stonewalled them. He confronted him that Park was in the ICU and six scientists had to die over the deadly technology. Though Ressler soon learned the U.S. government often uses redundant protocols on classified projects.

Park woke in the ICU and Ressler came to visit her. Peter was there and was standoffish towards Ressler as Park had told him the truth about the urine test. The doctor came in and informed Park that she didn’t have cancer but was pregnant. Their happiness quickly turned to dismay as they listened to the keyword. Peter was pissed to learn Park was hiding this. Park confided in Resser that she holds her secrets as she doesn’t know how to deal with losing control.

Copper’s wife was upset at him as he was the most honest man she knows and he asked her to lie for him.

Weecha murdered Jovanovich to protect himself and Dembe. It would also allow him to resume control of the airfields he once controlled. We flashback to the box Reddington gave Dembe in the past season. It was a token representing if Dembe ever wanted to leave the dark world- there would be no negative consequences against him. Dembe never opened it. Flash forward, Dembe tearfully opened the box (but what was inside it?) Reddington reflected with Mierce, feeling guilty, he told her, “I should have never come back…
