Snowfall Season 3 Episode 4… The Game That Moves as You Play

In the previous episode, we see what appears like Gustavo shoot Lorena. We learn that he kills her… a bullet directly in the third eye. Teddy returns and learns of his newly formed accomplices’ deadly deed and tells them that the DEA will be looking for her. Mama responds so casually with bricks of cocaína in her hands, “make sure they never find her… that’s it.” Teddy tries to make them wait for payment until the duo disposes of the slain agent but Mama affirms it’s not her problem. And adds if they want to do business with her- using her land and routes to smuggle drugs he’ll pay her now. And he does.

Franklin returns home to talk with his mother. Naturally, she’s worried wondering where he disappeared to. He explains it was sporadic and that he’s playing a different game now. One that moves as he plays. That can be deadly. Reminiscent of the plot from the insidious Cube movie. Saint updates Leon of his dealings with Avi,  advising the henchman we’ll accompany him next time. They speak on Man-boy’s disloyalty. Franklin assures Leon of his importance, that he adds a buffer layer between them and the police.

Late at night Teddy and Gustavo head to the woods to dispose of the body. McDonald cooks up a concoction consisting of water and lye. When heated it can dissolve a human body in just under thirty hours. All of the evidence must go and Reed gestures Gustavo hand over the murder weapon. Right before he does Gustavo tells him why he killed her… he did not kill her for lying to them but for pretending to love them (in the previous season as Soledad.) Upon receipt of the gun, it looks for a moment, like Teddy would use it on Gustavo but he tosses it in the grave. They then pour the liquid on the body and it starts to liquefy the carcass.

Franklin and Leon go to the skating rink for some fun time. Of course, his crush Mel is there. He wants to see her before she leaves for college. She plays hardball but he eventually warms her up.

Rival Gangs Mount Up

Next, we see a newly formed gang emerging in Los Angeles. They are called the LAPD. They’re rallying up to take down rocketing drug lords as the world games near. To understand the course of events (based on true events) that are about to unfold. You have to understand the dichotomy of south-central Los Angeles at that time. The LA riots of the ’90s can be traced to Operation Hammer- which seeded from the 1984 Olympics hosted in the city.

Los Angeles police amassed vast unchecked violent power. With a looming recession, growing unemployment, and rock cocaine starting to spread like wildfire, the department had to show force to crack down on the unbeknownst drug epidemic.

Police kick down the doors of several spots. Including the headquarters which at one point temporarily served as a “cookhouse” is trampled upon. There were no drugs there but Louie and Jerome were making love. In a rage, Unc talks recklessly to the commanding officer serving a warrant. So he instructs cops to smash everything. They’re mishandling Auntie and that set him off. The gang attacks him with nightsticks. Sergeant Wright emerges to witness the melee and backs out. Franklin and Leon both receive emergency pages.

Assessing Damages & New Ideas

I love how this show focuses on and details the storylines of those affected by the wild course of history that lead to the “crack” cocaine crisis. The Saint team assesses their losses and it’s bad. His people are out of jail and have a litter of charges from resisting arrest to attempted murder- but no one is talking. A lightbulb goes off in Franklin’s head when he realizes the minors were untouched. That was advantageous thinking at the time. Though it set the young black man up for early failure for generations to come.

Franklin rounds up his lieutenants. Assures them he has their backs as long as do what they’re told but there will be changes. He’s upset the cookhouse was discovered and asks the leader of that property was he slipping. The younging smartmouthed him and received a pistol to the face from Saint followed by henchmen fists and kicks. Leon finished him off.

Jerome returns home bruised but he’s a tough cookie. Franklin’s father sees vengeance in his eyes and talks the kingpin down from murdering cops. The repercussions would end negatively with black people and not just them. Mel then approaches Franklin to warn them to stop their operation because they’re provoking the police. Louie storms out of the house to attack the daughter of the neighbor responsible for their recent pain but is stopped. Melody upsets Saint with her warnings and he pushes her away…
