President Barack Obama won an NAACP Image Award for his book “A Promised Land.” He was one of many works awarded at the non-televised portion of the annual awards show which included literary, documentary (film and television), and activist and youth activist of the year awards. This event was apart of the virtual experience series. The finale of will apex to the televised award show airing on BET on Saturday, March 27th, 2021 at 8 pm ET/7 pm CT.
On the first night, March 22nd, there were featured appearances from presenters including entrepreneur and Shark Tank investor Daymond John, star of Netflix’s Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey, Madelen Mills, and Emmy Award-Winning Actor Terrence Terrell. Performers included Tonya Boyd Cannon and Zul-Qarnain who put together a creative mash-up of both a traditional and a reimagined interpretation of the Negro National Anthem.
On the following night, March 23rd, featured appearances from presenters including the star of The CW’s Batwoman Javicia Leslie, actor and comedian J.B. Smoove, and The Cast of BET+ Bigger. Performers included FlagBoy Giz and the New Breed Brass Band featuring Trombone Shorty who gave an electric performance that explored the cultural roots of New Orleans music.
On the third night, March 24th, featured appearances from presenters including Gospel legend CeCe Winans, stars of NBC’s “Good Girls” Retta & Reno Wilson, and Miss Juneteenth actress Nicole Beharie. Performers included Glbl Wrming, featuring Pell who gave a powerful performance showcasing the new generation of New Orleans talent.
The fourth evening, March 25th, featured appearances from presenters including singer/songwriter MAJOR., “black-ish” actor Marcus Scribner, rapper and actor Cliff “Method Man” Smith, and singer Tamar Braxton. Performers included Baba Luther, drummers and dancers who showcased the history of dance from African dance in New Orleans’ Congo Square to Second Line dance to Bounce dance.
For the big finale night, Lebron James will receive the President’s Award. Anthony Anderson will return as host of this year’s event. The 52nd annual NAACP awards show will feature performances from Image Award Outstanding Female Artist nominee Jazmine Sullivan who will perform–along with Grammy Award-winning singer Maxwell, who will celebrate the 25th anniversary of his debut album Urban Hang Suite. Throughout the evening there will be appearances from Alicia Keys, Andra Day, Arsenio Hall, Cynthia Erivo, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Michelle Obama, Misty Copeland, Regina King, Samuel L. Jackson, the cast of Tyler Perry’s Sistas, Swizz Beatz, and Tracy Morgan. MC Lyte will serve as the night’s Voice Over announcer.
We also glad to see one of our favorite authors, Walter Mosley, writer on Snowfall, has won an NAACP Image Award. As well as Michael Jordan’s The Last Dance documentary received the clutch win, too! We have the complete list of winners, check them out below!
