Warning… Spoilers below!

On Ordinary Joe Season 1 Episode 9, it’s Thanksgiving and each Joe experiences a different outcome on the holiday of thanks…

Nurse Joe

Jenny called Joe and told him that her law professor invited her to a pro bono case, giving her a second chance since she had a rocky start. However, that meant she had to stay in Atlanta and couldn’t come home for Thanksgiving. Joe was bummed and exhausted but knew it was an amazing opportunity. Jenny suggested they get an aid for Chris to help out and Joe was on board!

Joe and Chris had a long checklist of criteria and filtered caretaker candidates. Chris didn’t like any of them until one of Joe’s coworkers answered the ad. Kinsley and Joe had a rocky start while they were at work due to her dry sarcasm but she instantly hit it off with Chris as they had so much in common. Chris wanted to immediately hire her yet Joe was initially hesitant but gave in under trial terms. And since she didn’t have family in town she was invited to start immediately- even attend Thanksgiving dinner with the family.

Celeste came into town and Gwen was thankful as her children were under one roof! Joe missed Jenny’s call and returned it. When Jenny tried to answer, the snobby look from her professor told her it wasn’t appropriate to answer at the time. Suddenly, Barrick (a former student) returned to help with the pro bono case.

As the family gathered for Thanksgiving dinner, it was time for the gratitude-go-round, the tradition of passing the turkey idol, and each person saying what they’re thankful for. Chris inspired Amy and Eric to adopt a child and everyone was ecstatic! (Though Chris was a tad jaded as he felt he would lose all of the attention the couple gave him.)

Afterward, Kinsley stuck around to fold Christopher’s clothing and Joe was so impressed with her that he hired her!

Music Joe

Joe was venting with his drums and Eric confronted him about not playing at Amy’s event. Joe hinted at Amy’s affair with Bobby. Eric had known and didn’t tell Joe, his best friend was disappointed he didn’t tell him. Eric didn’t want to be in the middle of them and offered advice on how he dealt with a difficult situation of his partner not being honest with him.

Amy visited Joe in the studio to talk. Amy was hurting and thought he was cheating and pleaded it was a one-time mistake. He admitted he wasn’t honest about his newly discovered son Zeke but he wasn’t cheating with Jenny. She was desperate to repair things with him that she offered to cancel the fundraising event as they expected a house full of people in a few hours. He just wanted to get through the holiday.

Celeste surprised Joe with an early visit and wanted to talk frankly about Amy’s affair. He didn’t want to talk about it. She advised him not to hold his feelings in and communicate with her. Either he leaves or finds a way to make it work. When the family arrived Joe had to fake his game face.

Gwen was thankful that her children were under one roof! As the family gathered for Thanksgiving dinner, it was time for the gratitude-go-round, the tradition of passing the turkey idol, and each person saying what they’re thankful for. When it was Joe’s turn, Gwen knew what he was thankful for but Joe was hesitant and his mother sensed something was wrong with the couple. Suddenly, everyone got an alert that Regina Diaz held a press conference and would remain in her deceased husband’s congressional seat rather than serve out his term. That would make Regina into Amy’s opponent in the primaries.

Eric’s boyfriend Sai waited until after dinner to tell him what he’s thankful for. He was grateful to be able to be with him as an HIV-positive man (yet undetectable.) Eric was thankful he was honest and they kissed.

Joe decided to play at Amy’s event. He got a request to play his first song. As Amy emceed to bring him to the stage, she confessed that was the song he wrote when they had their first date trying to raise money to travel to her first interview with Bobby Diaz. She admitted that song made her fall in love with him. It made him emotional yet he still shunned her as he approached the stage. The lyrics made Joe break down, he wept and stopped playing. Frank pulled him from the stage to talk.

Afterward, Joe and Amy had a talk yet he pulled away from her. Amy got a message from her doctor. He informed her that she was pregnant!

Cop Joe

Amy and Joe woke together. (They had on pajamas so we can’t tell whether they had sex.) This was Joe’s first day back as a uniformed cop. Turns out, he wanted to bust himself back to a beat cop and no longer be a detective- knowing his Uncle would be pissed at the decision. He invited Amy to his family’s Thanksgiving dinner.

Joe went to work his new beat and passed out his business cards to residents who (and rightfully so) were reluctant of his help due to a history of systemic police overzeal. Amy went to help Gwen prepare Thanksgiving dinner yet was constantly checking her phone. A force of habit, checking if an emergency call would come in regarding the cop men she loved in her life.

When Joe arrived at his mother’s he was tackled (literally) by Celeste who was excited to see him as they horseplay. Gwen was thankful as her children were under one roof! They went to their traditional rooftop to talk. She wanted to know if things between him and Amy were serious

When Uncle Frank arrived he was crass towards Amy as he blamed her for Joe’s recent career decision. As the family gathered for Thanksgiving dinner, Uncle Frank now had some liquor in him and blurted out, “Is she living here?” Referring to Amy staying there temporarily while her place is restored. And since she no longer had a job Eric offered her one at his restaurant. Eric’s pregnant girlfriend Mal… correction fiancé blew the surprise yet requested Joe be their child’s godfather. Of course, he accepted!

Gwen was emotional and started the gratitude-go-round, the tradition of passing the turkey idol, and each person saying what they’re thankful for. Uncle Frank spoke what was on his mind. He was suspended indefinitely as a result of Joe and Amy’s probe into Bobby Diaz and he was offended Joe denied his promotion, returning as a beat cop. He blamed Amy for Joe’s recent decisions.

Celeste turned the mood sour with the truth! She spoke of how angry her dad used to get and how he wasn’t the model father for her- wondering why everyone else idolized him. She even confronted Joe for being 30 years old man and still living with his mother. She was upset no one in their family talked about things. Joe stormed out!

In the car ride, Joe confessed to Amy about that one Thanksgiving when his father got upset and threw a turkey idol and it hit Celeste in the head. He knew she was right about not talking as a family. Suddenly, Joe got a call from one of his residents from his beat as there was a fire and they bolted to the location. The fire was blazing and Joe sought to run in and save a boy who was trapped inside. Amy tried to stop him but he told her, “I don’t want to leave anything left unsaid… I love you!” and kissed her running into the burning building…
