Meek Mill Spearheads Prison Reform

Meek Mill recently wrote an opt-ed in The New York Times regarding prison reform. It details the missteps in our judicial system which grossly used a “technical violation” to send him back to prison for violating his probation. Meek says, he’s “a lucky one” because his fame and public support aided to his release- a luxury many others in prison cannot afford.

The video outlines the vicious cycle of unjust systemic treatment people of color have been experiencing in the U.S. for a long time. Mill says, it’s a “broken criminal judicial system.” Mill was arrested last year for popping a wheelie on a motorcycle in New York City. He was on probation for a gun/drug charge from a decade prior. Despite a New York judge throwing the case out, an unfair judge in Philadelphia ruled his infraction with the law as a violation of his probation and sentenced him two to four years in prison. He served five months and was released in April.

Now the rapper is advocating for a complete prison reform. His doctrine is simple- to encourage lawmakers do away with “technical violations”

  • Ex-prisoners should receive lesser probation periods
  • Improved bail system
  • Balanced sentencing structure

Meek Mill will soon have a foundation for his cause. This is going to be a hard up-hill battle for him, but I’m sure this situation happened for a higher reason- to mold him as a leader to fight future injustices. “I’m determined to use my platform to help those without the resources to make their voices heard,” states the emcee. Meek Mill released an EP soon after his release and releasing an album November 30th called Championships.
