Mary J. Blige’s music career began in 1991, but fast forward today, her music is just as relevant—if not more.

The singer/songwriter has garnered a whole list of accolades to rival the very best of them. Mary has sold over 80 million records, won 9 Grammys, 4 American Music Awards, and even been nominated for 3 Golden Globes.

If that was not enough, her album My Life was classed by Rolling Stones as one of the all-time greatest masterpieces. But beyond the skill and recognition is a life that was plagued by hardship.

Her childhood was anything but ordinary. Mary’s mother (Cora Blige) was an alcoholic, while her father (Thomas Blige) was a Vietnam War veteran struggling with PTSD. She opened up at how her “mother went through awful abuse… He left us when I was 4, but he’d come back from time to time and abuse her some more.”

And yet, those very life lessons led Mary to become who she is today. She has touched countless generations with her music centering on her experiences with abuse, depression, and addiction.

In order to mark the 25th anniversary of her critically-acclaimed album, My Life, Vanessa Roth (Oscar-winning director) will be telling the story of the woman behind the artist. In doing so, Mary will perform the album live for the first time ever.

Here is a snippet of the key quotes, giving an insight into what we can expect…

“When Mary sings, I heard the pain of a generation.”

Mary and her mother fled to Schlobohm Houses as a way to escape their abusive environment. Leaving behind her father at a young age was not easy, but then again, her destination was not exactly paradise. As the years passed, she recalled: “It was a dangerous place… She left us with people she thought could be trusted. They hurt me.”

And just as her song goes, “My whole world’s upside down,” her life followed suit until Mary found her calling. She began to attend church at the age of 12, and that is where she discovered healing through music. She remarked how she “loved being there… I felt wanted and special…I was praying as I sang… I felt the Spirit.”

But as her music career began to take shape, Mary became distant from her church life. As the success continued on the music scene, so did the chaos behind the veneer of serenity. Drugs, alcohol, and sex became a fabric of her life. “I had no self-respect. I hated myself,” she said.

“A lot of young black women relate to where she came from.”

But for all the adversity, Mary began to turn her life around. She ended up marrying music executive Kendu Isaacs. While they would go on to split, Mary regarded that as the turning point in her journey. “He was the first person to ever challenge what I did.”

Mary has given her people “a name to do something powerful.” Her story is truly inspirational and not one to miss. You can check all the details regarding the documentary below.
