On Law & Order: Special Victims Unit Season 23 Episode 7, Daria Cruz was escorted into SVU and she was hysterical, concerned about her sister. She got a voicemail from her and it said, “He raped me, choked, and tried to kill me!” She screamed then the attacker told her she can scream all she wants but no one cares…
It’s A Serial
Her sister’s name was Tanya. She didn’t check the voicemail until the morning and was distraught about it. She shared with the detectives that her sister was homeless and is a sex worker survivor. This led Rollins and Velasco to interview her last acquaintances. They spoke with two girls at the shelter, Snowflake & Missy, who pointed them to a girl named Beauty.
Beauty didn’t offer much information. Sooner after, Snowflake and Missy visited SVU to inform them that Beauty was missing. They dug a little further and revealed a missing persons file that suggested there were nearly a dozen girls from that area missing which fit a similar type. Rollins suspected that they were dealing with a serial rapist!
The team realizes the case was dogged. They then sought medical examiner Truman. He told them one of the girl’s liver and intestines were removed with a butcher’s knife and a meat cleaver- it was postmortem and crude. This led them to a butcher in the area the girls all trusted, Country. He holds their personal items so their pimps won’t confiscate their earnings. They hauled the main in for questioning.
They had evidence of his route on a traffic cam and threatened him with revoking his parole. He confessed he dropped Tanya off to her mystery date. He felt she was fine and would emerge in a few days.
Vampires & Mummies
Rollins and Velasco interviewed a kid, Jamal, in the neighborhood and they told stories of Vampires. Meaning, a man in the night who lingered in the nearby abandoned building. They took the info as a cue to breach and found an eerie room where a dozen women had been mummified. The women were dressed and placed as if they were attending a dinner party. Further investigation uncovered Tanya and Beauty on an exam table, dead and awaiting the same treatment.
The deranged suspect progressed his technique and managed to preserve the bodies- even removing their internals and brains. Chief McGrath couldn’t take the sight of it and spoke with Benson outside mandating she catch the serial!
They interrogated Country again and he was appauled claiming it wasn’t him. He recognized one of the girls, Shanice. He had dropped her off and broke down crying.
Medical examiner Truman found evidence from a few of the girls. This information exonerated Country’s guilt as he was in prison during the times there were murdered and entombed. The killer knew police uncovered his work and they were back to square one. They were desperate and conducted a news conference.
Reverse Psychology
Jamal saw Velasco and Fin at the crime scene and shared a description of the Vampire with them. The detectives met with the families of the identified girls. One murdered girl, Meredith’s son was autistic and overheard the conversation. He interjected vital information of his mother’s last boyfriend. Even recalling the license plate of the truck. This led them to haul in the owner of the truck, Trace Lambert.
Benson suggested Velasco play the good cop while she played the bad cop with Trace’s mother- who came to the station. Meanwhile, the detectives pressed on Trace. Benson used information the mother leaked against him. Emasculating him to get him to boast information… and he did.
Offering up information on how the owner of the building never caught wind for 10 years. Trace told her how he killed the owner by poisoning him and making it look like a heart attack. He then broke his act and confessed intimate details of how he killed his girls and boast that Benson tell his mother what he did…
