On Law & Order: Special Victims Unit Season 23 Episode 4, a serial rapist targets women with young children and rapes them in front of their kids! Chief McGrath is dismissive of the first case and only becomes interested when a colleague’s daughter falls victim to the rapist. He presses the SVU team hard for the prosecution of the suspect excluding the first victim’s charges opting for the stronger case. Ultimately, Benson heeded McGrath a stiff warning to stay out of her way or else she will resign…
On Law & Order: Special Victims Unit Season 23 Episode 5, a young woman Willa Bartola was eager to amplify her Tik Tok audience by joining forces with the exclusive Wheel House Tik Tokers. Her friend Kevan escorted her to the plush rooftop pad in Manhattan.
Giving You What You Came For
The adolescents were hitting it off well, making dance routines and easily breezing past a million views. Diggy Wheeler was technically the boss but you can tell Tate and Liam ruled him. You can even tell Diggy liked Willa but Tate and Liam were the heartthrobs and outshined him. Soon, everyone started taking shots and Willa admitted to being a lightweight.
Later on, she was getting wasted in the hot tub with the guys. Diggy noticed and tried to help her but their manager called so Tate and Liam took her to their bedroom. Next, we see Willa is a mess and Kevan found her. She made a Tik Tok video telling the viewers the two men raped her. Benson’s son, Noah, watched the video and showed his mother. And suddenly, the video disappeared…
At the office, the team was able to retrieve the video. The older cops were baffled by this new virtual world of insta-popularity but still had to pursue the evidence.
A young detective, Jet Slootmaekers, from the Organized Crime team came to visit Benson to tell her about Rita, one of the missing Albanian girls from Stabler’s case. The detective recognized Willa. The SVU team asked her what exactly is The Wheel House. It’s a content creation zest pool where creators churn out content 24/7 and the fame brings large endorsements!
The team interviewed Willa, she deleted the video because the Wheel House fans trolled her. She also didn’t get a rape kit or file a police report. Now it’s her word against theirs.
The SVU team planned a sting operation to catch Diggy on video since he text an apology to her afterward. When she got to the penthouse, she had undercover oversight by Jet. However, Tate and Liam popped up and started antagonizing the woman claiming the sex was consensual and that she got what she came for. They even went Live with the woman to tell fans that she was playing a prank on them and she was completely caught off guard and admitted she was joking.
The team saw her panic and immediately intercepted the guys. They were interviewed but let go because the police had a weak case. Shortly after, Tate and Liam made a video. The arrogant boys claimed the ordeal was consensual and boasted about it while insulting the police and ADA. The SVU used that as an admission of guilt and apprehended the young men. At their hearing, they had to pay a $1 million dollar bail, of course, the ADA wanted harsher terms.
Social Trial
The men boasted on social media and the judge set to silence them. The trial was a rollercoaster but more towards the social media stars’ direction. Their lawyer made Willa look like a desperate woman clout chasing fame. At several points, the trial seemed like it could be dismissed!
The monkey wrench in the case was Diggy as he really like Willa and he changed his stance from supporting his friends and testifying for them to testifying against them. When he got on the stand, he grandstanded and told the men about themselves. Ironically, that stunt landed him in contempt of court.
When the jury came back, they acquitted the men of all charges! Later on, Carisi found evidence that one of the jurors was a little too happy while on the case. They dug deeper and found evidence of Tate and Liam inviting her and another juror to be a part of the Wheelhouse during the trial. The judge found out about this and if it were true… the men can face 5-10 years in prison for jury tampering and bribery.
Thereafter, Willa confided with Benson and Rollins that Diggy invited her and Kevan back to the house to rebrand and become content creators for survivors of sexual assault. Diggy was righting his wrongs.
Trafficking
While Benson was working her case, she also worked Organized Crime’s lead- a rival of the Albanians. The man confirmed the drug smugglers were also bringing in girls too. This episode connects to Organized Crime, check out the recap!
