On Law & Order: Special Victims Unit Season 23 Episode 3, Benson and Carisi are blindsided by Det. Stabler, Sgt. Bell, and the FBI when their suspect in a rape case was redirected from prosecution and used as a pawn to lure a bigger fish. They had their man but took a risk helping the Organized Crime Unit. Their criminal helped apprehend a greater threat but they ultimately lost him to federal witness protection. This is the first time Benson had seen Stabler in months after ghosting her, Stabler crosses her for his case and is back gone in the wind…

On Law & Order: Special Victims Unit Season 23 Episode 4, Asst. Chief Tommy McGrath is now the acting Chief after getting rid of Garland. He’s moved into Garland’s old office and wanted to scrutinize many of Captain Olivia Benson’s old SVU cases. He even planted Detective Joe Velasco in the SVU squad officially.

An attractive woman, Crystal Nuñez, went dancing and met a handsome fellow. However, at the end of a great night, she went home alone. Suddenly, we see Crystal being slammed onto the bed and a man mounts her from behind. She’s terrified and tried to keep calm as her toddler son, Manny, is sitting a few feet from them being forced to watch by the man.

Crystal pleads to send the boy out of the room and he refuses. He wants the boy to watch. The kid is catatonic and peers at his mother’s eyes. She tries to play it off saying they’re playing a game. The man interrupts and tells her, “best part of the game… if he cries, he dies!

Rollins, Velasco, and Crystal on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit Season 23 Episode 4

When interviewed by Detective Amanda Rollins, Crystal shared, the rapist knew her name, knew where she lived, and even used a condom on her while he raped her in front of her child! She also told them about the guys who verbally harassed her while she brought her son ice cream earlier that day. She did recall the ice cream truck driver who yelled at the guys to scram.

Sgt. Fin and Velasco went to question the ice cream truck owner, Travis Hillsdale. They got suspicious of the man and asked him to come down to the station- he ended up in a line-up. However, Crystal vaguely recognized him and but didn’t identify anyone else. Soon, Crystal’s lab results came back with traces of semen from 3 different men in her rape kit…

Fin and Velasco went to visit the man Crystal was dancing with. He claimed he went home to his wife. The pair then questioned a third man, Manny’s father, who threatened he would kill the man who harmed Crystal. He claimed he was at home with his girlfriend. Rollins went to speak with Crystal’s neighbor who Crytal hooks up with occasionally and no leads there.

Benson and Fin took the complications of the case to McGrath who was dismissive of her actually being raped. Benson defended the woman. McGrath stifled them telling the cops there’s no case here…

Retirement

Benson visited her doctor who wanted her to consider retirement due to her injuries and a high-stress job. He gave her incentive to leave and she had time to think about it.

Shrink

Benson and Rollins spoke with Crystal to get Manny to see a child psychologist- perhaps he can reveal something about the man.

Prioritization

Suddenly, the SVU team got an emergency call about a woman who was raped in front of her 18-month old child. McGrath met them there and prioritized their case since the victim, Peggy Grogan, was the daughter of Deputy Inspector Dermott Grogan. How ironic of McGrath!

Benson and Rollins interviewed the woman and the perpetrator had the same MO. Claiming to be a utility worker, asking about the child, bursting through the door, and rape them in front of their children. In Peggy’s case, she had a hidden gun and when she tried to get it, the man attacked her and told her the same threat as he told Crystal. The description of the suspect was too vague just as before. McGrath was gungho on catching this animal, now…

Wrong Man

The SVU team got a hit to look back at Travis the ice cream man. When Fin, Rollins, and Velasco went to question him he tried to run and even pulled a gun on the detectives. Velasco side flanked the man and tackled him, roughing him up before making him surrender. Travis immediately claimed they had the wrong man! When they put him through the line-up, Peggy immediately picked Travis.

ADA Carisi and Rollins interrogated Travis in the presence of his lawyer and he claimed he wasn’t guilty and the cops had their minds made up.

McGrath was adamant in pressuring Carisi to prosecute the case with Peggy’s claim only- disregarding Crystal’s as it would introduce too many holes.

At the arraignment, Travis entered and was beaten to a pulp while in prison. Just as the judge requested his plea, suddenly a man entered with late-breaking news for Carisi. He’s just been informed that the DA was withdrawing the rape charges from Crystal and they will continue with Peggy’s case alone. Crystal didn’t get to testify and she felt as if her rape didn’t count…

Benson went to confront McGrath about the politics going on and the mole he planted in her unit. She gave him an ultimatum that if he gets in the way of her oath to special victims again he can have her badge. McGrath said he understood her…

  1. Brian says:

Glad to see Benson stand up to McGrath

    1. Crystal Nunez says:

My name is Crystal Nuñez. This episode really touch my heart. I was raped to and because it was years ago it couldn’t get prosecuted but it did help charges to be filed against the foster care agency because it gave other child victims who grew up to be able to speak up and not be afraid to hold them responsible for the taking of their trust childhood innocence and respect.
