On Law & Order: Special Victims Unit Season 23 Episode 17, Velasco’s hometown priest asks him and Benson for help finding three girls who were trafficked from his hometown to New York City. Velasco became personally involved but was sidelined for his own good, so he investigated alone and was arrested by police outside of his jurisdiction.
When Benson arrived, her team helped the other precinct investigate and learned the truth that the police Captain was in cahoots with the traffickers and had sex with underage and undocumented girls before they were sold off. Pressuring him led them to the sex trafficking ring leader to arrest him and save the women.
Warning… Spoilers below!
On Law & Order: Special Victims Unit Season 23 Episode 18, a young woman was attacked when she walked in Central Park and was left for dead. When McGrath made it to the scene, he pressured SVU for results since the press was on his back for answers…
Rollins visited the victim, Kayla, who visited a bar the night before. She was sulking because she had been dumped by her boyfriend and the bartender gave her a few extra shots. SVU investigated to learn that the bartender Dustin gave Kayla the shots while he was with his sister, Demmy.
Demmy visited SVU to give her account of the events and she told them about his muddy clothes she found and cleaned that evening. A search of Dustin’s room revealed Kayla’s wallet.
McGrath was excited as the case seemed to be a slam dunk since SVU caught a suspect swiftly. However, back at the SVU headquarters, Capt. Benson received an eerie call from a man who told them that they arrested the wrong man- offering details of the rape that was never released to the public. He claimed to have attacked again (showing another the audience an assaulted woman) then he hung up!
Getting Away With It
In speaking with Carisi, the case seemed to lead to either a copycat or the caller being the real rapist. However, the call was made near Kentucky. State police found another young woman was raped and left for dead in the same manner. Capt. Benson wanted to send Sgt. Fin and Det. Rollins to Kentucky to help in the investigation.
Meanwhile, Benson and Carisi interviewed Dustin once more for intel and he claimed that he made a drug deal the night Kayla was raped. They re-interviewed Demmy, figuring she was lying for her brother.
When SVU detectives arrived in Kentucky, they interviewed Shay and she gave them details that would help the case. Fin and Rollins got a hit on Shay’s rape kit and the DNA matched Dustin’s. It had also matched dozens of rapes for the past 20 years… which clearly exonerated Dustin because he couldn’t have been a traveling serial rapist since he was 7 years old! Whoever had his DNA was getting away with it, planting his DNA for the past 20 years…
Don’t Speak, My Wife’s Calling
The case got heavy with manpower and politics to help SVU. Authorities had to release Dustin and their investigation focused on a mobile rapist- possibly a trucker hitting small towns.
Carisi and Rollins spoke with Kayla and played the caller’s voice and Kayla recalled a man who hogged the jukebox playing country-western music. The security footage at the bar revealed their possible suspect. SVU got the idea to look for unsuccessful rapes near truck stops.
This led them to Raelynn Cole, one of the rapist’s past victims who got away. They showed her photos of patrons in the bar and she spotted the man who raped her. His name was West. She remembered because he paused his deed to answer his wife’s phone call who called him by name while he covered her mouth.
Going Back To NYC
Rollins found the possible suspect’s address and they raced to Aaron Wesley Parker. He wasn’t home so they spoke with his wife, Wiona Parker. She told him that he was at a local casino. Benson sat next to the man to bait him while Fin and State Police surrounded him. He was arrested for more than 26 rapes across the country!
McGrath was ecstatic for good press for the NYPD and pressed Carisi to bring the case home. Suddenly, Rollins was called to an attack on Demmy!
Brother & Sister
Initially, Demmy wouldn’t tell police who attacked her but they suspected she was the one who planted Kayla’s wallet in Dustin’s room. She saw Dustin leave with Kayla, then found Kayla’s wallet, and saw Kayla assaulted and left for dead and assumed it was her brother. She wanted her brother out of her life since he had also used and abused her for the past 10 years…
Turns out, Dustin only raped his sister while West raped Kayle, Shay, and dozens of other women. He boasted in his confession to SVU.
Dustin was hauled in and confronted for raping his sister and he tried to claim it was consensual. Meanwhile, McGrath held a press conference about the trucker rapist. She also gave kudos to her SVU colleagues…
