On Law & Order: Special Victims Unit Season 23 Episode 15, Sonny and Amanda were nervous about meeting his mother, Serafina Carisi (portrayed by Beverly D’Angelo). Sonny’s niece, Mia Morino (portrayed by Ryann Shane) was a rape victim advocate. Meanwhile, an affluent secret society of colleges kids invited coeds to a private party. They were to leave their phones and purses. They were to swear an oath to never speak of the events and served alcohol. After dinner, Mia called her uncle telling him that one of her dormmates was raped tonight…

Twiddle D & Twiddle Dumb

Annabel Nelson was the rape victim. Capt. Benson met Carisi and Rollins to interview her. She told them that she passed out and when she woke, Austin was inside her. She also remembered Austin referred to two other guys in the room, “Twiddle D & Twiddle Dumb.” They interviewed Sarah Franklin, her roommate and also an attendee of the party. She told them how the young men kept refilling their glasses with liquor and wouldn’t allow phones.

Detectives visited The Bishop Club, the president Whitaker Yates allowed them in after threats of warrants. Police then wanted to speak with Jake and Brad, known as Twiddle D & Twiddle Dumb. The adolescents demanded their parents come to the station and authorities obliged. Benson saw through their operation and knew the young men did this before…

Detectives sought to interview servants who worked the party. Pressing on one servant revealed they were mandated to have no empty glasses. Detectives noticed one of their own was once a member of the club twenty years ago, Detective Andy Parlato-Goldstein.

They chatted with him to go undercover for intel. Seems Parlato-Goldstein was a legend for inventing and mastering a drinking game at the club. He came bearing gifts and they showed him around, gloating in their mischief. The young men sang their new chant to him which was an admission of guilt to raping women. Carisi had all the evidence he needed to change the whole club!

Trespassing

Benson spoke with the university’s president, Rosa Freeman, about arresting all of The Bishop Clun members. Mia came to the university to witness the perp-walk and lead a protest. The men were antagonistic of the police and their arrests. Chief McGrath grilled Benson about not receiving a heads-up about the mass arrests due to the optics. Surprisingly, the bureaucrat shifted to agree with Benson- his effort to change his ways.

Of course, all of the young men plead not guilty. The defensive attorney (once a judge) called a press conference condemning police.

Suddenly, SVU was summoned to the university because female protestors were attacked. The Bishop Club members claimed the women trespassed and they exercised their rights. Det. Parlato-Goldstein floats the idea of charging rape in this case as a hate crime. ADA Carisi replied, “that’s just something the DA’s office doesn’t do.” Capt. Benson felt it should in order to send a harsh message to would-be attackers. Will she be able to get such an extreme charge tried and convicted?

Hate Crime

President Freeman wanted more transparency with the police moving forward. McGrath wanted an update on the case. Benson told him they were seeking a hate crime prosecution based on gender. Again, McGrath was onboard (shocking)! Suddenly, SVU got an update from the tech team who went through the young men’s phones while in lock up. They had pictures of Annabel with the words “Sl*t,” “Wh*re,” and “Piece of Meat” on her body. It strengthened the prosecution’s case because they had hate actions, hate verbiage, and hate speech to support their claim.

After Carisi took his plea to the judge’s chambers, one of the young men, Jake, was hauled to prosecutors by his family to testify against his frat brothers. Jake was forced to write the hate messages. He confessed that he and others were made to watch and hold Annabel down while Austin raped her.

Carisi turned his attention to Brad and then Austin who spewed more hate rhetoric about Jewish people. The DA’s office brokered a plea deal for the promising young men…
