Johnson (TV Series) Premieres on Bounce TV

Johnson is a new dramedy on Bounce television which is produced by Cedric The Entertainer. It’s about four Black men; Omar, Greg, Keith, and Jarvis who met each other in grade school and have been best friends ever since. They all met because they share the same last name, Johnson, but they are not related. Johnson focuses on what happens when the four guys find themselves in vastly different places in their lives and it begins to threaten their bond. They confront and find humor in the most current controversial social issues from the Black man’s perspective, ranging from love, marriage, business, politics, and religion. Johnson premieres on Bounce TV on Sunday, August 1st at 8 pm EST.

Celebrity Myxer had a chance to catch up with the main cast members. We spoke with Deji LaRay (Bosch, Greenleaf), Thomas Q. Jones (P- Valley, Luke Cage), Philip Smithey (Switched At Birth, The Rookie), and Derrex Brady (NCIS, First).

The cast also includes Cedric the Entertainer (The Neighborhood), Angela Yee (Breakfast Club), Earthquake (Shaquille O’Neal Presents: All-Star Comedy Jam), D.L. Hughley, and Rodney Perry (Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Big Happy Family) are guest stars this season.

Johnson Cast Members Interview

I asked the fellas, why do they feel that releasing the show now is great timing, seeing as though it was first filmed in 2018 and carried through the pandemic. Deji enlightened us with the fact that the timing was perfect. The show was able to write in current social moments, such as the murder of George Floyd and other police injustices, the elections, the terrorist insurrection, BLM protests, and more. “The climate is right. The world is listening,” says Laray in reference to discussing these topics from a Black man’s perspective.

I also asked the guys, are men really setting traps to if a new potential woman is for the streets? LOL! Thomas explained, “Social media is like the wild wild west,” there are people of all interests on those platforms looking for different things in life. There are celebs, businesses, those looking for genuine relationships, many looking for flings, those trolling, many looking for entertainment, or even fantasies of embellishing their lives. Ex-football player Jones said it can be true with the trap, but for both men and women. And oftentimes it can save you time and effort if set.

Johnson Premise

Although Deji LaRay and Thomas Q. Jones are actors in the series, they work as showrunners. Their ear was to the streets, listening to the comments on social media as well as current events in order to culminate a grown man show! Johnson is not about stereotypical monoliths we see from Black men in television, but deep diversity and complexities. It offers different, strong perspectives on topics yet leaves it in the air for viewers to determine how they feel about certain topics covered.

“A lot of times our narrative is created by people who haven’t lived our lives,” explains Thomas Q. Jones in regards to their portrayal of their roles. The group wanted to bring authenticity to what it means to be a Black man in American. Often, our brothers are stereotyped as angry and withdrawn from elite socialites. This show breaks the mold.
