Joaquin Phoenix Criticizes Movie Industry For “Systemic Racism”

Joaquin Phoenix calls out the film industry for “systematic racism” in his acceptance speech at this year’s BAFTAs. The ceremony is equivalent to the Oscars in Britain.

“I think that we send a very clear message to people of color that you’re not welcome here,” Phoenix said during his acceptance speech at the BAFTAs

The star of last year’s hit nominated film, Joker, expressed his concerns as he won the best actor award for his role.

“I feel very honored and privileged to be here tonight,” as Joaquin began his speech. “BAFTAs have always been supportive of my career and I’m deeply appreciative.”

“But I have to say, that I also feel conflicted because so many of my fellow actors that are deserving don’t have that same privilege.”

There was no person of color nominated in the best acting categories and no woman was featured in the list of nominations for best director.

“I think that we send a very clear message to people of color that you’re not welcome here,” Phoenix adds. “I think that’s the message that we’re sending to people that have contributed so much to our medium and our industry and in ways that we benefit from.”

Phoenix even expressed his concerns with diversity “inclusions” on film sets.

His courage was met with praise by other actors and directors on social media. I applaud his voice to raise awareness to the ugly elephant in the room. Bravo! The entertainment industry needs more voices of power like this to help create change. What are your thoughts on this subject? Sound off in the comments below!
