What is Irma Vep about?

Irma Vep Season 1 premiered on HBO on Monday, June 6th, with its first of 8 episodes. Each episode was around an hour long. Irma Vep starred Academy Award-winning actress Alicia Vikander as Mira, the actress portraying Irma Vep. It is written and directed by French filmmaker Oliver Assayas.

Oliver Assayas wrote and directed the 1996 film Irma Vep which starred his real-life wife, Maggie Cheung. Cheung made a rare appearance in this version of Irma Vep as well, even though she and Assayas divorced years ago and she retired from acting. Assayas based this version of Irma Vep on his and Cheung’s marriage and subsequent divorce after filming 1996’s Irma Vep.

Irma Vep Season 1 Recap

Mira arrives in Paris a little scared and very insecure. She bumps into her ex-girlfriend Laurie almost immediately, who blows Mira off and gives Mira even more of a relationship complex. Mira’s ex-boyfriend arrives in town to film his movie and confides in Mira that his new girlfriend is pregnant. When she suffers a miscarriage, Mira finds him knocking on her door and ending up in her bed.

Mira finds herself questioning her feelings for Zoe, the wardrobe director, and even finding feelings for Regina, her assistant. Regina is madly in love with Mira but can’t admit it. Mira finds comfort and counseling within the eccentric director Rene. She bonds with her fellow costar Gottfried who is addicted to crack but really a fun loveable guy.

Rene deals with his demons of his past and failed marriage during the making of the film series. He quits and is brought back at Mira’s insistence. Mira becomes Irma Vep and imbibes the character as herself.
