Warning… Spoilers below!

On House of the Dragon Season 1 Episode 2, in the castle, Viserys and his lords discuss the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, who has recently died. Ser has invited several new candidates to court, and they’ve all passed their trials. Meanwhile, Lord Velaryon is furious about the ships and men he’s lost to the Triarchy.

Small Council

He wants the lords to make a move to prevent the Triarchy and the Crabfeeder from advancing any farther, but Viserys is wary about warring with the Free Cities. The Seven Kingdoms have never fought in open war against the Free Cities, and the losses on both sides would be huge.

Lord Velaryon is convinced that the Crabfeeder has no reason to fear the Seven Kingdoms when the king’s brother has been allowed to take over Dragonstone. As Rhaenyra listens, Viserys describes the men and ships he has ready to move against the Free Cities if necessary.

Rhaenyra suggests they use the Dragonriders as a show of force against the Crabfeeder, but Otto Hightower shoots down her idea and claims she can better use her talents elsewhere. Cowed, Rhaenyra chooses between the candidates for Lord Commander of the Kingsguard.

Marriage of Duty

Rhaenyra thanks the knights under the watchful eye of Hightower and Princess Rhaenys. One of the knights is Ser Criston Cole, who asked for Rhaenyra’s favor at the heir’s tournament. Rhaenyra chooses Sir Cole and refuses to be swayed by Hightowers demeaning attitude.

In his private rooms, Viserys teaches Alicent the history of Valyria, and they inspect his stone version of the castle and surrounding city. Later, Rhaenyra and Alicent discuss Visery’s possible remarriage, and Rhaenyra is upset at the thought of him trying for another heir.

Alicent encourages Rhaenyra to try and pray, and Rhaenyra voices her hopes that Viserys will see her as more than a young girl. Away from the castle, Lord Corlys and Viserys have a more charitable conversation about the Crabfeeder and the enemies who surround the Red Keep.

Lord Coryls is sure that with the combined effect of a king with a female heir, Prince Daemon taking over part of Dragonstone, and the Crabfeeder disrupting their shipping lanes, someone will take advantage of their vulnerability. He thinks the king should marry his daughter, Laena.

The Natural Order

Viserys claims he isn’t ready to remarry since Aemma died less than half a year ago, but Lady Rhaenys reminds him he’s expected to strengthen the crown and produce more heirs. At dinner with Rhaenyra, Viserys is grateful when she eventually breaks the silence between them.

In his chambers, Viserys undergoes treatment for his wounds from the Iron Throne. When he brings up Lord Corlys’s offer of marriage to his daughter, his healers suggest it’s a good match for the king and the realm. Hightower isn’t so sure since Lady Laena is very young.

On a walk with the maybe twelve-year-old Lady Laena the next day, Viserys talks dragons with her. She offers to give him many children and strengthen him, but Viserys is disconcerted by her obvious youth. In the castle, Rhaenyra discusses the match with Princess Rhaenys.

Princess Rhaenys claims Rhaenyra doesn’t understand the order of things and warns her if her father has a son, the lords of the realm will make him heir, not her. When Rhaenyra says she’ll create a new order as queen, Rhaenys tells her the chance for a woman to rule has passed.

Dragonstone

Rhaenyra is confident in her appointment as heir, but Rhaenys claims the hard truth is that men would rather burn the realm down than allow a woman on the Iron Throne. At a meal with Alicent, Viserys is interrupted by an emergency meeting of the small council called by her father.

When Viserys meets with the small council, he discovers Prince Daemon has stolen a dragon egg from the keepers and left a note saying he plans to take Mysaria as a second wife. Mysaria is pregnant, so he’s stolen the dragon egg to put in the bassinet with his unborn heir.

Prince Daemon plans to wed Mysaria in two days and has invited Viserys to the wedding. Hightower and the lords are disgusted with Daemon’s behavior and suggest that Viserys act, while Rhaenyra is horrified when she finds out that Daemon stole her late brother’s egg.

Viserys, furious at the news, plans to go to Dragonstone and drag Daemon back to face justice but Hightower demands to go in his place. While suiting up to head to Dragonstone, Hightower asks Alicent to go and see the king while he’s away before leaving with a contingent of knights.

Show of Strength

At Dragonstone, Hightower is met by Prince Daemon and Lady Mysaria, who welcome him to the island. Hightower demands that Prince Daemon leave the island, abandon Mysaria and turn his troops and arms over to the king. Daemon refuses, and his troops are loyal to him alone.

Hightower warns Daemon that a show of force against him and his men would be a declaration of war against the king, which Daemon seems to relish. He calls his dragon to his side, and Hightower seems to have lost, until Rhaenyra enters on Syrax, matching Daemon’s strength.

When Rhaenyra approaches Daemon, Hightower tries to have her removed, but she warns him that Syrax is very protective. Rhaenyra reminds Daemon he’s in her castle, and that he already has a wife. It becomes clear that Mysaria had no idea of Daemon’s announcements to the king.

Rhaenyra tells her uncle that to truly achieve his place on the throne he should kill her, now. He cannot do it, and instead returns the egg to her and leaves with his men. Rhaenyra sends the precious egg back to the castle with Hightower and leaves for the castle on Syrax.

Liberation

In the heart of Dragonstone, Prince Daemon finds Mysaria, who is angry about his announcement of their wedding and future children. Mysaria cannot have children, and she feels unprotected while Daemon feuds with his brother, as she might be collateral damage.

Later, at an audience with Lord Lyonel, Viserys shares his worries that Lord Coryls has only offered his daughter in marriage for his means. Lord Lyonel suggests that Lord Coryls is a better ally than an enemy and that marriage to Lady Laena would make him one for good.

When Viserys discovers that Rhaenyra has been to Dragonstone he’s furious that she disobeyed him, when she could have been killed. She gently reminds him that she accomplished what Sir Otto could not, and he tells her how similar she is to her mother.

Eventually, they discuss his need to take a new wife, and he promises that she and Aemma cannot be replaced. She promises he understands his need to protect the realm and the next day at the small council, Viserys announces that he will take a new wife, Alicent Hightower.

Betrayal

Otto Hightower is pleased with the news, but Lord Corlys is furious that Lady Laena hasn’t been chosen when his house is more powerful and his daughter is Targaryen. Rhaenyra, shocked by the announcement, leaves the small council without speaking to Alicent or Viserys again.

At dinner with Prince Daemon, Lord Corlys reminisces on his house’s achievements and the strength it took to bring them this far. He and Daemon have both been passed over by the king, and Lord Corlys suggests that the prince move against the Crabfeeder and prove his worth.
