Previously on Grey’s Anatomy Season 19 Episode 6, on the heels of life-changing news, a thunderstorm hits Grey Sloan. The attending surgeons and interns work together to save an injured reporter and family affected by the storm. Meanwhile, a beloved author undergoes a risky surgery, and complications from the storm arise.

Warning… Spoilers below!

On Grey’s Anatomy Season 19 Episode 7, it’s Meredith’s last day at Grey Sloan, but her last surgery doesn’t go as planned. Her relationship talk with Nick doesn’t go as planned, either. Meanwhile, Maggie and Winston perform a groundbreaking partial heart transplant successfully, but the happiness is short lived when Maggie relents that Winston can’t change his field this late in the game. As Meredith leaves Seattle, her and her sisters give keys to Mika, Simone, and Lucas to stay there for the time being.

The Beginning of the End

Jo grabs Link and asks him to go across town and pick up a goodbye cake for Meredith. He had a busy day of charting ahead of him, but Jo convinced him to do this for her.

Winston and Maggie bring the interns to meet Jo’s patient: a newborn named Arlo fisher. Arlo has heart failure, and was on the transplant list. However, Winston reveals that they’re only doing a partial heart transplant, taking only the major arteries. The organ itself is weak and not suitable for transplant. The parents are worried about the risks, but Maggie assures them that it’s their best option to save Arlo.

Nick goes in to talk to Meredith, and it’s revealed that Meredith hasn’t been answering Nick’s calls. Meredith says that it’s been hard living in a hotel, but Nick doesn’t think that’s an excuse. They begin to argue, and Meredith calls Nick out for not saying that he loves her back when she told him. Nick gets furious that she seems to be pinning everything on him not saying that, but Meredith assures him that she isn’t putting all of the blame on him. However, Nick doesn’t seem to care about what she’s staying and storms out.

What Are You Willing to Risk?

Maggie and Winston tell the interns that only one of them will be able to scrub in to observe their surgery. After they’re dismissed to go to the skills lab for their competition, Winston pulls Blue aside. He’d caught Blue doing finger exercises in front of Arlo’s parents, and tells him not to do that. Blue reveals it helps him remain neutral on difficult cases when emotions are involved.

Teddy asks Richard who he’s looking at for the new Chief of Surgery, and tells him that he should look closer to home to bring on. Richard thinks Teddy is right, and tells her to come to the search committee to give her opinion. However, when Teddy finds out there’s no extra pay involved, she seems less than inclined to join. But she’s stuck in the predicament now, so she says she’ll be there.

Meadow, Arlo’s mom, tells Jo that she wants to wait for a whole heart. Jo reminds them that it could take up to 6 months to find a match for an infant heart, but Meadow believes that they’ll get another one quickly. Jo assures them that Maggie is the most knowledgeable and knows what she’s talking about. Still, Meadow doesn’t want to risk Arlo’s life for an experimental surgery, so she wants to cancel the surgery.

A Hint Into the Intern’s Lives

The interns compete to win the spot on the surgery by completing stitches. Mika gives up and storm out. Lucas needs help, and Simone goes to help him, and things seem to spark between them again.

However, they’re interrupted when Simone gets paged. Tess, the author that Simone is a huge fan of and treated, is back in Med. She overexerted herself and hurt her abdomen.

Mika goes to visit Helm at the bar, and asks for help with her stitching. Helm seems less than inclined, but Mika tells her that she needs this win, and a reason to keep going. Mika even offers to be barback for Helm if she wins the contest among the interns, and this seems to finally get Helm to want to help.

Simone and Lucas bring Tess to get a scan, and Tess notices a ring on a necklace that Simone is wearing. She asks if Simone is engaged, and Simone says she was, but isn’t anymore. Lucas notices this and seems stunned.

Meredith and Nick come in to look at Tess’s scans, and decide to rush her up to surgery.

Avoidance

Amelia asks Maggie about her relationship status with Winston, and Maggie thinks that they’re good, at least in terms of work and being excited for the surgery. She admits that they haven’t spoken much, if at all, about what they discussed right before the lightning struck the house.

Jo tells Maggie and Amelia that Meadow wants to call the surgery off. Amelia offers to talk to her since she isn’t her doctor.

Amelia sits down with Arlo’s parents and tells them about her son Christopher that only lived 43 minutes because of his medical condition. Amelia tells them that she thinks about him all the time, and if there was any chance that Christopher could’ve lived, she would’ve taken it.

Winston examines Jules, Mika’s, and Blue’s sutures. Winston determines that Mika is the winner and can scrub in on Arlo’s surgery.

It Goes Right, But Also Terribly Wrong

In the observation room, Jules admits to Blue that she tanked the competition because she’s scared of babies. Jules tells a story about her mother giving birth to her brother in a kiddie pool in the backyard when she was only five. Blue can’t help but laugh at the absurd story, and the two giggle until Zola shushes them and tells them to watch the surgery.

In Tess’s surgery, she flatlines. Meredith starts compressions as Simone and Lucas watch in horror. Simone eventually takes over doing compressions. She’s told to stop by Nick: Tess is gone. Simone asks if she can do Tess the honor of closing her up. Lucas wants to stay and help, too.

Meanwhile, in Arlo’s surgery, they successfully get the heart beating after attaching the arteries.

In the scrubbing room, Nick tells Meredith that he hates everything about that day. He goes on about how this isn’t what he was there to do. Meredith tells Nick that she’s a grown woman with a big career and three kids. She’s going to pick herself and her kids and what they need every time. She tells Nick she isn’t going to beg him to love her; he can be in her life if he wants to be.

Last Words

Simone finds Meredith outside and apologizes for getting emotional about Tess. Meredith tells her to only apologize when she stops feeling. Tess was her last surgery.

Meredith asks about Simone’s grandmother, and Simone says it’s bad. Her sister remembers everything about her mother, and blames Simone for her death, so they have a rough relationship.

Simone tells Meredith that Tess put her last book on a flash drive and wanted to get it to her publisher in Boston. Simone gives it to Meredith and asks her to deliver it.

Stand Up, Speak Out

Jo tells Arlo’s parents that his heart is pumping entirely on its own.

Maggie and Winston are ecstatic about their win today, and Mika thanks them for being amazing and saving that baby’s heart. She reveals that she lived in a van that got towed, so this was the highlight of an otherwise awful day.

Lucas asks Amelia how she stopped caring about what everyone else thought. Lucas reveals that he wanted to fight for Tess to go straight into surgery instead of getting a scan but didn’t do it in fear of getting in trouble. Amelia reveals that she does care deeply, and does what she thinks is right anyway. Amelia assures Lucas that next time, he’ll fight for what he believes.

Raise A Glass

Link show up with Meredith’s cake. However, Link didn’t check it, and they realize their cake is for a Bar Mitzvah. There isn’t time to take it back, so they have to improvise. The result is a terribly written “Happy Meredith”.

Teddy goes to Richard and pleads her case to be the new Chief of Surgery position. She’s offended that she wasn’t considered, but Richard reminds her that the program was failing, so they needed a committee. However, he tells Teddy that if she wants the busy and stressful job, she can have it. Teddy tells him that she wants to think on it.

Meredith shows up and everyone cheers for her and toasts her.

Miscommunication Ruins Everything

Nick sits at the bar, and Helm notices him. When she realizes that Nick is at the bar drinking instead of being at Meredith’s goodbye party. Helm calls him out for being stupid and being willing to give up Meredith Grey when she fell in love with him.

Maggie tries to use their success with Arlo to tell Winston that he can’t switch fields because he has a gift. Winston is in disbelief, and tells Maggie all he’s been waiting for since their fight was an apology for what she said about not respecting him. Winston tells Maggie that she’s cold, and now he has something that he doesn’t respect that about her.

Nick realizes he won’t make it in time to catch Meredith before she leaves on her plane. He pulls over and calls Meredith, and tells her that he’s loved her since he met her. He gives a whole emotional speech, but Meredith says that she can’t hear him, but she’ll call him back when they land. Nick realizes he just lost her.

History Repeats Itself

Maggie asks if she can stay with Amelia, and Jules and Blue hook up again.

Lucas shows up at Meredith’s old house to stay there, when suddenly Simone shows up, too. She tells him that Meredith gave her a key and said that she could stay there while they’re fixing the hole in the attic.

Simone reveals that when she got kicked out of her residency, it ended her relationship, too. She pushed Lucas away because she didn’t want him to be a rebound. However, Lucas says he’s okay with it, as long as they know what it is that they’re doing. Simone says it will be a bad idea since they live together now, and Lucas agrees.

Mika shows up, too, saying that Maggie gave her a key and said that she could stay while they fix the roof in the attic.

Meredith reads her kids Tess’s new story on their flight to their new lives.
