Warning… Spoilers below!

On Grey’s Anatomy Season 18 Episode 17, Jo juggles her residency and being an attending for general surgery, and Meredith babysits a stoned Richard.

The episode begins with contrasting scenes of Link hooking up with a random girl, while Jo busies herself with both her residency and attending duties.

Catherine is headed to a breakfast with someone from the accreditation council to try and save the residency program. After she kisses Richard goodbye, he searches the fridge for breakfast, and decides on a juice drink with Catherine’s name on it.

Miranda brings Pru to Grey Sloan, and she meets Maggie and Amelia. Miranda sees the mess of the OR board, with a bunch of cancelled surgeries. She claims that nothing was done in her absence. She demands that Maggie and Amelia fix it.

The Munchies

Nick is nervous about his first real shift at Grey Sloan, and Meredith tells him she’s still mad at Miranda since she hasn’t apologized. Richard walks in, and Nick tries to introduce himself, but Richard heads straight for the fridge looking for snacks, completely ignoring him. Meredith questions Richard’s behavior, and Meredith drags him away to examine him.

Meredith asks Richard if he started drinking again, but he just laughs and reveals all he’s drank is Catherine’s juice. He thought it was kombucha, and when he freaks out after Meredith tells him that kombucha has alcohol content, he looks at the bottle to double check. Meredith takes the bottle from him, and realizes it’s not kombucha, it’s cannabis. Richard is stoned.

Relationship Issues

Teddy and Owen attend therapy, and the therapist suggests that they let Leo be gender creative, and to follow his lead, no matter where that takes them.

After Link asks Jo what’s she’s doing later that night, she asks him to watch Luna so she can hang out with Todd. Link isn’t impressed by the request, so he heads straight to his patient, Simon, who is there with his pregnant wife, Kristen.

Maggie tells Winston that she had breakfast with Wendell that morning, and they talked about his college experience. Winston reveals that Wendell never went to college, that he tends to overexaggerate his life to people.

The Babysitter’s Club

Richard freaks out about being stoned, but Meredith reminds him that it was an accident. Meredith wants to call Catherine to come get Richard, but he begs her not to, because she’s busy trying to save the program. Meredith has to stop him as he tries to run out of the room. Schmitt shows up, saying he’s on Meredith’s service, but she says Nick is taking all of her cases, so he needs to report to Nick instead. She asks Schmitt to not tell anybody that he saw her there.

An Enticing Offer

Nick confronts Miranda about how she blames him for taking Meredith away, but Miranda claims she isn’t mad at him. When Nick questions why she’s being hostile if that’s not the case, Miranda sarcastically fakes an introduction, upset that he’s just going to leave soon anyway. Nick reminds Miranda that he was a great teacher, and offers to help her save the residency program while he’s in Seattle for the next few months.

A Blessing and a Curse

Link reveals that Simon came in four years ago, and has been trying hard to start a family with Kristen, but the chemo and radiation made that difficult. Jo calls Link out for his response to her question earlier, and Link said he just didn’t like how he was asking her to hang out, and she asked him to babysit in return. They look at Simon’s scans, and see that his cancer is progressing. Since it’s now a general surgery concern, Jo tells Link that this could be them “hanging out”.

Link and Jo walk in on Simon cuddling with Kristen, and they have to deliver the news that he needs a surgery to stop the obstruction in his small intestine. Simon assures Kristen that he’ll be okay, and that he’ll be able to meet their baby when it arrives in a few months.

Before he goes under, Simon asks Link to tell Kristen to not name their baby after him if he doesn’t make it. Link says he’ll do what he has to do, but would prefer it if Simon survived.

An Unnecessary Blow Up

Maggie tells her and Winston’s patient, Margot, that they need to go to the OR for her abdominal pain. Winston suggests that they call her wife, but Margot gets upset, saying that her wife thought she went to the doctor for a while ago, and that she won’t be happy to know that she lied. Winston questions how Margot’s wife will feel if she dies, and Maggie is shocked at his abruptness.

Right before her surgery, Winston tells Margot that they’re obligated to call an emergency contact, so they’re calling her wife. Maggie assures Margot they don’t need to, but Winston is persistent, so much so that Maggie tells him to leave the room. However, Margot’s stats drop right as he leaves, and they rush to help her.

Maggie tells Winston that he can’t talk to patients the way he did to Margot, and even blames him for her rupture. Winston says that it’s not his fault.

Enough Stress to Go Around

After Richard sings to a photo, he tells Meredith there’s a possibility that Nick may fall in love with Seattle. But Meredith can’t stay in Seattle, and Richard knows it’s because the city is haunted. Richard says he felt the same way when Ellis died. Meredith makes a call in the hallway, and Richard sneaks out of the room behind her back.

Amelia asks Teddy how therapy is going, and Teddy doesn’t seem to understand the therapist’s advice, because she’s ready to take the next step in Leo’s journey. Amelia tells Teddy about Kai, and how they’re nonbinary. She tells Teddy that people don’t need to be defined in order to be loved.

Miranda watches as Nick is put on the OR schedule with Schmitt. She confronts Nick in the OR, saying she simply gave him privileges and that’s it. Schmitt begins to freak out as Nick asks him to control the bleeding of their patient, remembering that the last time he was in charge of someone’s life, they died. Miranda tries to pressure him to do what he needs to, and Nick tells Miranda to respectfully shut up. Schmitt gets his act together. Richard comments from the observation room, and Meredith finds him and drags him away.

Richard seems to have come down from his high as Amelia shows up to trade babysitting shifts with Meredith. Richard confesses to Amelia that he feels like he ruined his sobriety. Amelia assures him that he didn’t mean to, and he earned those ten years of sobriety, so this shouldn’t affect his view on it. Richard appreciates that, and even agrees. He tells Amelia what Addison told him, about how they need to focus on the people in order to save the program.

Meredith confronts Miranda about what she wants from her, and why she’s taking out her anger on Nick. Miranda breaks down, saying she doesn’t know, that everything is just a mess and it’s all on her. After she calms down, she thanks Meredith for staying to help, and even apologizes for what she said to Meredith. When Miranda asks where she was all day, Meredith reveals that Richard accidentally got stoned. Miranda is unimpressed, and then tells Meredith that Nick seems like a great teacher.

Time is Precious

Jo tells Link that they can’t take out the obstruction without putting his life in more danger. She tells Link that he’s dying, and can maybe last a few more weeks. The answer doesn’t satisfy Link; all he wants is for Simon to meet his baby.

Kristen asks Link and Jo how long Simon has to live. Jo says maybe a month at most. Kristin tells Jo that they need to give her a C-section and get the baby out now so that Simon can meet him. Jo assures her that it’s too soon, but Link steps in and offers to get Carina’s advice, saying she’s the actual OB-GYN, and that Jo is just a first-year resident. Jo follows Link away, upset by his comment. Link accuses Jo of using him, and doesn’t want her advice at all. Jo pulls him into a room to fight with him. Link claims that Jo used him for sex, and now only asks him to babysit when she wants to hang out with Todd. He begins to storm out, but Jo reveals that she fell in love with him. She said that she asked him to move out in order to protect their friendship. She doesn’t want his anger at her to affect their patient, because Jo assures him that taking out Kristen’s baby is too risky, and that Link wouldn’t be able to live with losing both Simon and the baby.

Family is Everything

Margot’s wife shows up, and thanks Maggie and Helm for calling her. Maggie finds Winston and asks him what is going on, that he’s been acting different since Wendell started staying with them. Winston takes Maggie away from listening ears, and then tells her a story about how Wendell forced him to be an unknowing getaway driver when they were teenagers. When the cops pulled them over, Winston got arrested, but Wendall got out of any punishment. Winston tells Maggie the predicament that Wendell put him in: to convince Miranda to buy the faulty patches. He says Wendell always gets in his head and makes him a liar. He asks Maggie if he can have a night alone with Wendell to “loudly” talk it out. She offers to stay with Meredith and Amelia.

Kristen tells Simon that he has to live long enough to meet their son, but they can’t give her a C-section for another few weeks. She threatens to name the baby after him if he dies any sooner than that.

Schmitt thanks Miranda for allowing him to come back, that he remembered why he wanted to be a surgeon in the first place. Miranda thanks him in return.

Link runs into Amelia, and says he could use some time with Scout after the day he’s had. Amelia asks Link if he’s okay, and he tells her that he’s not. Maggie asks Amelia to crash with Winston, and tells Amelia that everything isn’t okay with her, either.

Richard thanks Meredith and Nick for covering for him all day. Catherine walks in, and Meredith apologizes but reveals that she had to call her. Catherine apologizes to Richard, and when he confronts her on why she’d have marijuana in their house, Catherine reveals that it’s for her pain. Her cancer has progressed.
