Watch Grey’s Anatomy Season 18 Episode 15 “Put It To The Test”
Previously on Grey’s Anatomy Season 18 Episode 14, tensions at Grey Sloan Memorial rise as the effects of the physician shortage begin to show. Meanwhile, Meredith struggles to step away from work as she spends a sick day at home with Zola, and the hospital receives an unexpected visitor.
Warning… Spoilers below!
On Grey’s Anatomy Season 18 Episode 15, Richard gets his evaluation, and the Medical Accreditation Council visits Grey Sloan to inquire about the residency program.
A New Procedure
Meredith welcomes Nick to Grey Sloan, and introduces him to Dr. Bailey.
Nick introduces the residents to Mason Taylor, a brain dead patient. After Helm wonders why Nick brought an organ for a brain dead patient, Nick reveals that they’re giving Mason a pig kidney, doing a xenotransplant.
Time to Get Up
Helm shows up to get Schmitt out of his rut. She informs him that the internet is bashing the residency program. She tells Schmitt to get up and come to work, even for one day. Helm says if he can’t do it for himself, he should at least do it for her. Schmitt reads the comments attacking the program, and realizes they’re being written by his mom.
The Need to Impress
Dr. Bailey tells the attendings that they’re going to be interviewed by the Medical Accreditation Council as well as the residents about the residency program. She sends them off, telling them to impress people. She informs Richard that he’s the first to be interviewed, but Richard’s evaluation is at the same time, so he has to go to that instead.
Dr. Hamilton and Kai show up, because they’re the ones evaluating Richard. At the same time, two members from the Medical Accreditation Council (MAC) show up at Grey Sloan.
The Evaluation Begins
The MAC gets a tour from Dr. Bailey. They point out how many surgeons Grey Sloan has lost recently. Dr. Bailey and the MAC show up right as the residents celebrate the completion of the transplant surgery.
A Mother’s Love
Schmitt argues with him mom, telling her that he doesn’t need her to fight his battles for him online. She tells him he shouldn’t have been in that operating room alone, that he should’ve been trained. Schmitt defends the Webber method, saying he’s the one who failed.
As Schmitt’s mom storms back up the stairs, she trips and falls, hitting her head.
Schmitt calls 911 to get an ambulance for his mother.
The Truth Comes Out
Dr. Hamilton tells him that it could be difficult growing old as a surgeon, that he understands the struggle.
Richard confronts Dr. Hamilton about trying to steal Meredith from Grey Sloan.
Richard gets angry with Dr. Hamilton, saying that losing Meredith won’t help the issue with the residency program. Richard gets upset and quits in the middle of one of his tasks, saying he needs to redo it.
Schmitt calls Richard and tells him what happened to his mother. Richard rushes out of his evaluation.
A Series of Interviews
The MAC interviews Winston and Maggie, and questions how their relationship went from student/teacher to husband and wife.
They meet Owen, and he tells them he’ll be able to operate soon. The MAC tells him they know about his study on veterans, and mention how several of those same veterans have died recently.
Link switches from talking about the residency program to talking about his heartbreak and mess of a life since he moved to Grey Sloan.
The MAC talks to Jo, and asks her why she left. She tells them that she had a breakdown and needed a change, and that it wasn’t because of the hospital. Jo assures them that the residency program and Dr. Bailey are the best.
Nick meets Mason’s wife, Jan. She wants to see Mason, but Nick calms her down and tells her that she can see him later. Nick reminds Jan that she consented to this experiment, and that if it works, it could save thousands of lives. She can’t burst in there, or it’ll ruin everything. Jan breaks down in Nick’s arms as Meredith watches.
Once a Teacher, Always a Teacher
Over the phone, Richard assures Schmitt that he can help his mom after Schmitt has doubts. Schmitt cuts into his mom with a knife, and realizes it’s worse than he thought. The ambulance arrives right on time.
The MAC asks for Richard, and Dr. Bailey awkwardly walks away to find him. She runs into him after getting off the phone with Schmitt and updates her on what’s going on. Dr. Bailey can tell something else is off, and Richard asks if she’s spoken with Meredith.
The Tipping Point
Meredith finds Nick, and Nick tells her the blood pressure plummeted, so the transplant isn’t working at the moment. As she’s consoling him, Dr. Bailey walks in and immediately reveals how upset she is that Meredith is about to leave them for Minnesota. Dr. Bailey calls Meredith selfish for leaving the hospital that raised her and made her. Her heart begins acting up, but she just gets angrier.
Dr. Bailey says that Meredith is the same girl that follows around her attending and fools around with him. Meredith raises her voice, telling Dr. Bailey not to speak to Nick that way, and not to speak to her that way, either. Dr. Bailey seems very out of it all of the sudden, and Meredith sits her down and sends Nick to get help.
Breaking the News
Meredith stresses to Nick about needing Dr. Bailey to be okay. She tells Nick you aren’t supposed to stay at the place that you were a resident at, or that’s how you’ll always be seen instead of who you become.
A doctor alerts Nick that the pig kidney in Mason is producing urine.
After examining her, Maggie tells Dr. Bailey that she’s fine, but obviously very stressed. Maggie wonders where Richard is, and Dr. Bailey mentions the evaluation. Maggie tells Dr. Bailey that she’s heading toward another cardiac issue if she keeps stressing out.
Dr. Bailey mentions that Meredith may be leaving, which is news to Maggie.
Three’s a Crowd
Amelia finds Kai outside, but Kai can’t reveal anything about the assessment. Kai wonders if Richard has dementia or something wrong since he barged out of the room in the middle of the tests.
Link walks up, waiting for an ambulance and isn’t happy about finding Amelia and Kai together. After introductions, Amelia steps in between Link and Kai, wanting to stop Link’s “tantrum” before it begins.
Schmitt shows up in the ambulance with his mother, and Link takes her away. Richard calms Schmitt down, and Kai tells Richard that he can go back to the exam and keep taking it. Schmitt says everything is his fault and breaks down as Richard holds him. A member from the MAC observes this.
If These Walls Could Talk
As Dr. Bailey catches her breath and Richard finally sits down for his interview with the MAC, flashbacks are shown of the first set of interns. We travel down memory lane as Richard tells them about all the amazing surgeons that have studied at Grey Sloan.
Schmitt speaks to Kai and Dr. Hamilton about Richard for his evaluation. He tells them how much Richard has taught him, and how he helped save his mother’s life.
Richard tells the MAC that he doesn’t want to retire, but if he needs to step down to let future generations continue to learn at Grey Sloan, then he will.
Richard continues his tests with Kai and Dr. Hamilton. Kai lets him know that he passed with flying colors. Amelia comes in and tells Richard that Schmitt’s mom is going to make it.
A Decision is Made
Dr. Bailey offers to show the MAC members more, but they said they’ve seen enough. The MAC said that they can usually tell if a residency program isn’t working, but that Grey Sloan has one of the best they’ve seen. They’re also impressed with Richard.
After this good news, though, the MAC tells Dr. Bailey that they don’t have enough teachers or surgeons to keep the program running. With that, they inform Dr. Bailey they are putting the residency program on hold, and that they will be back to evaluate in a few weeks before they shut it down.
Meanwhile, Nick shows Meredith that the xenotransplant worked. They celebrate the win, and Jan finally gets to see her husband.
Meredith tells Nick that she’s ready to start over. She’s going to take Dr. Hamilton’s offer.
