Watch FBI Season 4 Episode 16 “Protective Details”

Previously on FBI Season 4 Episode 15, the team realizes they have a cross-country serial killer on their hands after another body is found bound with the same sophisticated knot as their local victim. The investigation leads them to a team of MMA fighters. The guilt seemed to point at the youngest brother in the crew, however, the eldest brother was the stone-cold killer who brutally beat women to death.

Also, the case has ties to Isobel’s father, Robert, and his hotel, leading to revelations about their fractured relationship. What started as family friction eased a bit by the time the case was resolved…

Warning… Spoilers below!

On FBI Season 4 Episode 16, ICE Agent Mike Mulder was shot twice and killed by a sniper at a charity hockey game of ICE vs the DEA. Others wounded experienced minor injuries. However, Congressman Curtis Grange (portrayed by Brett Cullen) attended the game. The working theory was that someone had a vendetta agent the federal agent…

Friends In High Places

When Agents OA and Wallace got to the scene, there wasn’t much footage except from the Congressman’s film team. However, OA experienced Grange’s attitude upon first meeting him as the hotshot politician already blamed the attack on a leftwing extremist and scolded the agent for not arriving faster. He even commented on OA’s heritage. OA calmed the man, telling him it was too early to assume who was responsible for the attack.

Grange told OA that the cowards who attacked would be brought to justice and boasted about his friends in high places

Canvasing the scene revealed a locker room adjacent to the ice rink where the shooter could hide and flee. OA found the shell casing. Ballistics results found unique characteristics with the round. The ATF had already been keeping a database on custom rounds and a hit came back on a local gunsmith named Jim Weaver. Time to question him!

Agents Bell and Scola visited Jim’s garage and pressed him for information and he obliged the agents. The team vetted leads to a right-wing extremist attorney named Brad Baker.

OA and Wallace went to the man’s law office and he fled them immediately on a motorcycle. Searching his office revealed a sniper rifle…

American Trash

The Feds tracked the man to an abandoned warehouse and he surrendered. Bell and Wallace interrogated him and he claimed not to be involved although the evidence was clear. Then he lawyered up.

Just when they thought the case was open and shut, they learned Grange posted a tasteless video full of his propaganda to force his agenda. He showed the scramble of the shooting and boasted, “This will keep happening unless America takes out its trash!”

Vendetta

The team listened closely to the video and the shots signaled rapid-fire, something the Baker’s gun wasn’t capable of. They felt they had the wrong man, and confirmed it when a judge was shot with the same M.O!

When agents got to the scene, they learned the judge took two to the chest just like Mulder. Vince, the judge’s assistant stood next to her and the Feds interviewed him. He told them that they weren’t supposed to be at that courthouse and figured the shooter was surveilling the judge.

The tech team discovered she had a trojan virus installed on her laptop and they shifted to find a tech-savvy shooter. They led them to Oscar Rodriguez who had beef with the both ICE agent and the judge. When the Feds breached his home they found research material on deportation law. They found a photo of Oscar and Brad hugged up and a handwritten letter.

Agents confronted Brad about the letter, his relationship with Oscar, and why he ran. He explained Oscar’s pain when Agent Mulder arrested Oscar’s parents for deportation. The judge deported his parents who had been in the States for over two decades. As soon as they returned they were gunned down and left in a ditch- that made Oscar snap! Oscar took Brad’s guns and was raged with revenge.

Protective Details

Brad wouldn’t help the FBI find him so they hacked Oscar’s laptop and found he sent a trojan virus to Grange. Agents rushed to intercept Grange and saved him from getting killed! The shooter escaped…

The FBI pulled Grange aside to update him about Oscar. They proposed offering him protection while he toured and OA volunteered to safeguard the man. Despite OA’s recommendation, he wanted to speak at a fundraiser later that day.

OA and Grange got a chance to talk candidly. Grange asked OA why he doesn’t like him and he bluntly explained that his campaign was against immigrants and filled with hatred towards them- which is what this country was based on.

OA made Grange realize the true reason he was upset, an illegal alien killed his wife nearly a decade ago. Now that they had an understanding, OA mandated he wears a bulletproof vest. The team canvas the rooftops but didn’t have eyes on Oscar.

They set up bulletproof glass for Grange to speak behind. He still ranted his hatred propaganda. He stepped from behind the glass to greet the donors and Grange was shot in the neck and died instantly!

Scola spotted Oscar fleeing and gave chase. Oscar was cornered, grabbed an innocent girl on the streets, put a gun to her head, and then backed into a bodega…

Understood

The Feds brainstormed a plan to talk him down yet the rest of the team outflank him around the back. They hauled Brad to the scene as a means to talk Oscar down.

Wallace entered to negotiate with the man while OA and Scola breached the rear. She reasoned with the man while agents crept inside. Wallace pulled Brad inside and Oscar opened up then got agitated. Agents positioned right behind him and he chose to turn and attempt to fire but OA opened on him– giving him two shots to the chest. Oscar died…

Later on, OA researched Grange more and understood his twisted agenda a bit more. Grange blamed the immigration system, Oscar did too. OA stopped by Grange’s home to visit his son Ethan, who he bonded with to offer him an application to join the FBI in the future…
