Warning… Spoilers below!

On Dark Winds Season 1 Episode 6 Finale, five weeks before the heist, Agent Whitover approached James Tso (posing as Benjamin) while he was looking for people to join the Buffalo Society. Agent Whitover threatened James with federal arrest unless he cut him in, and set him up with his new pilot Chip Woods.

In On It

In the present, Chee arrives at the station looking for Bernadette and is upset when he hears she and Agent Whitover are on their way out to a remote canyon. On the drive, he calls in on the radio and tells Bernadette she’s in danger in Navajo, and she gives him her location.

When Bernadette and Whitover get to where they found the helicopter, he goes to take a piss and Bernadette makes her escape. When Chee arrives looking for her, he finds Whitover instead, who realizes that Chee is now more loyal to the Navajo than he is to the FBI.

At the Buffalo Society hideout, Leaphorn watches as James takes the Mormon father out and forces him to go to Devoted Dan’s, but he accidentally gives his hiding spot away. When Frank and James notice him hiding in the rock formation, they begin to shoot at him and seal him in.

But You’re Here

Bernadette sees Chee arrive, but heads towards the hideout after hearing gunshots. Chee and Whitover draw on each other, and Whitover shoots Chee in the arm, knocking him down a nearby hill. The Mormon father, in a hurry to get to Devoted Dans, crashes and flips the van.

Back at the hideout, James and Frank start a fire to prevent Leaphorn’s escape, while two Navajo men notice the flipped van as they drive by. While Bernadette is getting nearer to Leaphorn’s hideout, Whitover is close behind her and Chee is lying in a ditch, injured.

The Mormon father survives the crash and manages to send someone back to the cave for his family. Bernadette arrives at the hideout unnoticed by James and Frank, as Leaphorn drops bullets in the fire, managing to injure James. Once they leave, he gives chase immediately.

Bernadette free’s the Mormon family and steals Franks’s rifle, while Leaphorn flats the tires on James and Franks’s escape vehicle. When Bernadette leads the Mormon family to safety, she runs into the injured Chee who admits he came back for her before going after Whitover.

The Way it Has to Be

Unfortunately, Whitover is already inside the cave system and manages to disarm Leaphorn. Frank and Leaphorn are shocked that Whitover is in on the scheme, and when Frank moves forward, Whitover kills him. He also shoots Leaphorn in the shoulder when he tries to move.

After falling into a nearby cave and hiding, Leaphorn readjusts his dislocated shoulder as James and Whitover each walk out of the cave with half of the money. As the sun is coming up, Whitover exits the cave and prepares to detonate the mine, but Bernadette and Chee stop him.

Whitover tells them that Leaphorn is dead, but Bernadette finds him alive inside the hole used to hide the Mormons. Above, Whitover threatens Chee, letting him know he’ll tell the FBI the money is Chee’s, and that he was a member of the Buffalo Society if he doesn’t let this go.

When Leaphorn gets out, he heads out after James. Guy Atcitty, sent back by the Mormon father, overhears Whitover calling Chee a fool for solving Anna’s murder and degrading her. He shoots Whitover in the heart, instantly killing him. Chee tells him to go and takes his gun.

Truth and Fantasy

After dragging Whitover’s body inside the cave, Chee plans to tell everyone that Nakai shot Whitover, but Bernadette mentions that Leaphorn will know. He notices the dynamite strung throughout the mine, and they decide to simply detonate it and destroy the evidence with it.

Leaphorn tracks James to a nearby property, but James comes up behind him with a gun and disarms him. In a shack, James holds Leaphorn at gunpoint and Leaphorn talks to him. Eventually, James forces Leaphorn out of the shack and kills himself, preferring to die a martyr.

Up at the mine, Bernadette and Chee detonate the dynamite, destroying the cave and everything in it. At Leaphorn’s, he and Emma finally lay Joe Jr’s jacket over the fire and grieve him properly with the help of Bernadette, Guy, Helen, and Sally Growing Thunder.

Three months later after leaving the bureau, Chee is in the process of reconstructing his old house. Leaphorn stops by to talk and Chee tells him the truth about what happened. Leaphorn tells him he got away with it since there’s money missing, and Frank Nakai is missing.

Leaphorn and Chee shake hands, and Leaphorn tells him he can come and help them out anytime.

  1. Jeanne Davis says:

It’s about time we got a great mystery series, no dirty language or bedroom scenes (bedroom activities should be kept private anyway). I’m looking forward to season 2, hoping this series will be on for many years.

Loved the series! In episode 6, there was an Indian poem/prayer – I thought it was haunting and beautiful. Do you know where I can find a copy?
