Citadel Season 1 Synopsis

In the aftermath of Citadel’s fall, elite agents Mason Kane and Nadia Sinh, stripped of their memories, have spent eight years hidden under new identities. When a former ally seeks help to thwart the powerful Manticore syndicate’s sinister plans, the duo embarks on a perilous global mission, navigating a web of secrets, lies, and dangerous, unyielding love.

Season 1 Episode 1 Premiere “The Human Enigma”

Eight years ago, Nadia and Mason were on a covert operation on a speeding train in Italy. After a confrontation, Nadia learned that Citadel would be disbanded by Manticore. A bomb detonated, and Mason was found with amnesia, taking on the identity of Kyle Conroy. Nadia was missing, and presumed dead.

Later, Dahlia Archer seeks the Citadel X-Case and enlists Anders Silje’s help. Mason, now with a family, is kidnapped by his former Citadel colleague, Bernard Orlick, who reveals his true identity as a spy. Bernard explains the importance of the X-Case and asks for Mason’s help to retrieve it, mentioning Nadia’s presumed death. In a flashback, it’s revealed that Nadia survived the train explosion years ago.

In a flashback, Nadia survives an explosion and loses her memory due to a safety protocol. Eight years later, Mason and Bernard set out to recover the stolen Citadel X-Case in New York City. After facing resistance, Mason retrieves the case and learns its importance. Anders catches up to them, and Mason escapes with the case while Bernard is taken captive.

Mason finds Nadia in Spain, who initially doesn’t recognize him. When her memories are restored, she helps defeat Anders, and they escape. Dahlia orders Anders to retrieve Mason, while she interrogates the captured Bernard for Citadel secrets.

Amnesiac Mason questions his trust in Nadia as they navigate their past and present relationships. Flashbacks reveal Mason’s daring mission to steal a deadly virus, during which he first meets Nadia. Despite growing closer, trust remains uncertain as they face betrayals and double-crosses.

Bernard endures torture while Dahlia threatens his family. Meanwhile, Mason learns of Nadia’s possible involvement in Citadel’s fall and her true allegiance. Bernard offers Anders a deal to reveal Brielle (who is actually Abboy Conroy) is alive and is now married to Kyle/Mason. Anders and Brielle were once in a relationship!

Mason and Nadia execute a daring rescue mission at a black site in Morocco, saving Carter Spence amidst a hail of gunfire. Flashbacks reveal a tangled web of secrets, deceptions, and high-stakes operations, centered around the enigmatic operative Celeste Graham, known as Brielle. Tasked with infiltrating the Silje brothers’ operations, Brielle delves deep undercover, setting her sights on Anders Silje and the powerful Oz Key, a tool capable of seizing control of a nation’s technology. As time wears on, Mason’s worries about Brielle’s long silence morph into a suspicion of betrayal.

Convinced of Brielle’s treachery and fueled by his love for Nadia, Mason takes a drastic step – orchestrating a memory wipe, or “Backstop”, for Brielle. He does so under the guise of a relocation program, a lie he hides from Nadia. Following the procedure, an emotional Nadia thanks Mason, unaware of his dark secrets. The episode culminates in a shocking twist as Carter reveals Nadia as the true thief of the Oz Key. Mason is left reeling, torn between his love for Nadia and the harsh reality of her betrayal.

Although there are troubled roots with this series (announced in 2018, creative staff replacements, reshoots, and the final budget tipping $200 million), it will air, and a second season has been ordered. Citadel is executively produced by the Russo Brothers. David Weil is the current showrunner and executive producer.
