Warning… Spoilers below!

On Chicago Med Season 8 Episode 16, Will and Cuevas help a worried girl who doesn’t know what’s wrong with her, and fears she’ll die like her brother did. Meanwhile, a new birth turns scary when a paranoid father ends up pinned to an MRI machine, putting his life in danger. Kai and Crockett work a case together, until Kai becomes the patient himself.

Cold Feet

Dr. Charles runs into Liliana cleaning his office, and offers to help clean up his mess. Liliana assures him that it’s okay, it’s her job.

Hannah brings Archer his water bottle; he’s apparently been leaving it everywhere and forgetting about it. Hannah wants to make sure he’s staying hydrated on his renal diet.

Sharon talks to Cuevas about her DACA renewal, and they set a meeting for the end of the day to talk about it.

Will gets called to help a woman named Maria, who was brought in by her parents. They speak Spanish, so they get Cuevas to help translate. Cuevas tells Will that Maria’s parents say that she has a sickness, and if they don’t help her, she’ll die.

Cuevas and Will can’t figure out what’s wrong with Maria. Cuevas reveals that her parents said that her older brother Hugo had an illness, went to the hospital, and died a few days later. The doctors couldn’t figure out what was wrong with him, either. Cuevas wonders if there’s a psych case going on; maybe her grief and emotions about losing her brother are manifesting into physical symptoms.

Hannah helps a pregnant woman named Layla get ready to give birth. Her husband, Quentin, begins to freak out, saying he needs to check if he left on the oven at home. Hannah stops him, and Quentin says he doesn’t feel like himself. Hannah gives him a pep talk that convinces him to get back to his wife.

Crockett and Kai go talk to their patient, Sam, who is getting his appendix removed. During the chat, Kai is cocky about his Crossfit group, and his ego only grows after he makes several comments to Crockett about how simple this procedure will be.

The Tables Have Turned

Maria tells Cuevas that she can’t sleep or eat, and is convinced that she has whatever illness her brother had. Cuevas tells her that her grief could lead to physical symptoms, but Maria isn’t convinced. She claims that Hugo’s tests were normal, just like hers were, but he died.

Cuevas doesn’t think it’s a psych disorder; Maria is completely aware of the situation. Will said that the doctor at Oakfield, the hospital where they were at before, said that Hugo died of brain swelling, but they didn’t know what caused it. He died only 3 days after being admitted, so whatever it is, it moves fast.

Hannah adjusts Layla to help get the baby out. They deliver the baby, and Hannah gives Quentin the scissors so that he can cut the umbilical cord. He takes them, but when he looks at the baby, he says that that isn’t his son. He freaks out and asks Layla who the father is, and she assures him that he is. Quentin begins hyperventilating and starts slashing out with the scissors before running out of the room.

Hannah chases after him, and security and other doctors are alerted and try to help. Quentin continues to freak out, and grabs a gurney and walks in to the room behind him, which happens to be the MRI room. Because of the magnets, Quentin is pulled with the stretcher to the machine. He gets stuck to the machine, and the scissors end up in his neck.

An Impossible Solution

Hannah says they can’t turn off the machine, because the magnet is holding everything in place. They risk him losing more blood and dying if they shut it off. Instead, they call for rescue, and Hanna assures Quentin he’ll be fine.

Dr. Charles shows up to the MRI room to check on Quentin. They give him a sedative, and Dr. Charles notices strange raised moles on his neck.

Song, Archer, and Sharon talk to Tony, Capp, and Cruz, who showed up to help. All of their tools are metal, so they try and discuss it to figure out how to go about it. Song tells them that if they can stabilize Quentin and make sure the bed won’t harm him, and get Archer to make sure the wound is good, too, and only then can they turn off the MRI machine.

Sharon updates Dr. Charles on the situation, and reveals that it’s risky, so they agreed to bring Layla down in case things go sideways and Quentin dies.

Doctor Goes Down

In Sam’s surgery, Crockett lets Kai take over to get some practice. While there, Kai has some heartburn issues, and ends up passing gas. He apologizes and tries to get back to work, but the pain only seems to get worse, and Kai passes out.

Maria starts seizing , so they sedate her. They want to bring in neurology, and begin to come up with a plan, but Doris tells them that Sharon needs them to stop treating Maria.

Crockett checks out Kai, whose heart rate plummets until he passes gas. Crockett calls for an X-ray, and they see that his colon is in his chest somehow.

Sharon tells Cuevas that they’re dealing with an insurance issue: Oakview is in their insurance network, so Maria needs to return there if insurance is going to get involved. Cuevas wants Sharon to reason with the insurance company, but Sharon says there isn’t much wiggle room.

Rose Colored Glasses

Dr. Charles tells Quentin what’s going on and what the doctors and the firefighters are going to do. Quentin asks if he’s going to die, but Dr. Charles tells them they’re going to do their best to help him.

Layla shows up, and everyone leaves the room to give them a minute alone. She shows him a picture of their son, who she named Trevor, after Quentin’s father. Quentin tells Layla to tell their son he loves him, and Layla assures him that he can tell him himself when he’s out.

Once she’s out of the room, though, she bursts into tears. Layla doesn’t understand what happened; she doesn’t recognize the man in there. Dr. Charles says that there can be some signs for a sudden switch like that, and asks if he’s had any outbursts or physical symptoms lately. Layla says she’s been so preoccupied with her pregnancy that she hadn’t noticed anything off with him.

Crockett tells Kai that he has a diaphragmatic hernia so big that the colon moved into his chest. Crockett thinks that Kai has had this issue for a while and was undiagnosed, but with his Crossfit, it’s probably been brought to the surface a lot easier.

Crockett gives Kai his surgical options, but Kai doesn’t want an incision where he’s going to recover for a long time. He says he needs a procedure in OR 2.0 and nothing else.

Will, Cuevas, and Sharon tell Maria’s parents the situation. Sharon claims that they can continue to treat her, but insurance won’t cover the cost. Her parents argue, and Maria says that she’ll go back. Her parents try to reason with her, but Maria tells them that she won’t do that to them and risk all of the hard work they’ve put in and the opportunities that they’ve created for themselves and their children.

A Sudden Shift

Dr. Charles checks in with Hannah, and reveals that he thinks the lumps on his neck indicate a physical issue that in turn are causing his mood swings and strange behavior.

Will gives Maria a thumb drive of all of their notes from Med before she leaves. However, when the nurse drains Maria’s urine, Cuevas calls over Will. Apparently they can smell something in the urine. Will says they have to run one more test, and he says he’ll pay for it himself if he has to.

Archer steps in in the MRI room and takes his time to carefully clamp the scissors so they don’t move. The firefighters step in, and everyone holds their positions as they turn off the MRI machine. The ropes hold, and so do the clamps, and Archer is able to remove the scissors. They’re able to get him on a stretcher safely.

Archer asks for some water, and stumbles and appears dizzy as he leaves the room.

Everyone Gets An Answer

Crockett tells Kai that his hernia is gone and fixed, but Kai is worried that he’ll only be known as the “fart doctor” now. Crockett tells him that nobody will remember, but Kai isn’t so sure.

Dr. Charles assures Layla that Quentin is doing okay, and he’s more calm now. Dr. Charles reveals that he has a genetic disease, and that it was possible triggered by a lifestyle change, such as in his diet or medication. Layla reveals that his whole diet changed when she got pregnant and her sense of smell was sensitive. She says that Quentin gave up his whole diet and was eating processed foods her whole pregnancy to help her.

Layla goes in to see Quentin, who apologizes, even though he doesn’t understand what happened to him. Layla apologizes for not paying more attention to him. Hannah brings in baby Trevor, and Quentin gets to finally meet his son.

Will and Cuevas tell Maria that she has a metabolic condition known as the maple syrup urine disease. Hugo had it, too, but never had a seizure and needed a catheter, so the doctors couldn’t smell the urine like Cuevas and Will could. Maria is still worried that she’ll die since she has the same disease that Hugo had, but Cuevas assures her that she has a manageable form of the disease, and all they need to go is observe her protein levels.

Honoring Sacrifices

Liliana finds Dr. Charles cleaning his office. He reveals he was embarrassed about their encounter that morning, and doesn’t want her to think that he takes her or her job for granted. Liliana says he’s very thoughtful and sweet, and the two share a kiss.

Hannah brings Archer his water bottle again. She brings him a tracker to put on his water bottle so he doesn’t lose it, but he says that he doesn’t need it. He found out that his kidneys are getting worse, so he needs to go on dialysis.

Sharon congratulates Cuevas on her big win with Maria’s case. Cuevas confides in Sharon, revealing that she’s been thinking about leaving Med. Her parents moved to Canada since they couldn’t solidify their documentation, so she wants to see them, but possibly wouldn’t be able to come back into the United States if she left.

Cuevas was inspired by Maria’s bravery and what she wanted to sacrifice to help her family. She realizes that her parents sacrificed so much to get her there, which is why she has to stay. Sharon tells Cuevas that she’ll see her parents again, but until then, she’ll have a family at Med.
