Warning… Spoilers below!
On Chicago Med Season 7 Episode 16, Dr. Scott and Dr. Marcel received a young family in the ED. Lucy and her husband brought in their 10-day old daughter Kayla. She had a condition that required surgery on her boul to find out the issue. The family had no other support system. Marcel operated on the babe, they learned that her intestines were deceased and all of it had to be removed. Kayla developed a birth defect and was very sick. The baby wouldn’t survive without an infant intestine donor. The supply was slim to none…
Need A Favor
Scott and Maggie treated a man, Devon, who was stabbed in the gut with scissors. Luckily it wasn’t serious. The man was eager to leave, however. Scott wanted a surgeon to take a look at the wound from the inside and he was resistant.
Meanwhile, Milena visited Scott asking him to discharge Devon because he was her C.I. and was needed for a deal that evening which was detrimental to her case. It was a conflict with his oath as a physician but he suddenly changed his mind and Maggie questioned him about it.
Scott met with Milena after releasing the man, giving her post-care instructions. He wanted to know her real name. She told him, after the case…
A few hours later, Devon returned to the OR with a gunshot!
Long Haul
Halstead explained to Maggie how the money from the whistle-blower settlement would help him get out of debt he racked up from med school. Halstead worked with a patient, Mr. Hermanez, who had severe respiratory issues from long-term COVID-19. A deeper scan revealed the hidden issue and the man agreed to the surgery. However, in the eleventh hour, he changed his mind.
Arranged
Goodwin chatted with excitement with Dr. Charles about her new grandbaby coming soon. Charles learned that Taylor was hanging out with Dr. Shentu. Varsha brought her stubborn mother, Mrs. Patel, in for a check-up. Dr. Taylor treated her. She couldn’t move her legs. Several tests revealed no medical issues so Dr. Charles was tasked with the case.
Taylor and Charles learned Varsha was being arranged to wed and her husband-to-be wanted to visit. Charles had a theory that the stress of the arranged marriage caused so much stress causing Mrs. Patel’s symptoms. A chat with her solidified the diagnosis as the woman had a panic attack simply talking about it!
Charles took the news to Varsha who spoke with her mother. Mrs. Patel shared her arranged marriage story with her daughter and they bonded more. Varsha told her mother that she will proceed with the marriage. Taylor asked Varsha whether she was proceeding for her mother yet she said she was doing it for herself. She felt it was better than the current landscape of date with apps. When her new hubby-to-be came, he was taller than she envisioned and very handsome.
Charles consulted with Taylor and revealed arranged marriages ended in divorce 4 percent of the time in contrast to 40 percent for those who had a choice.
Brand New Family
Dr. Archer received a trauma patient, Jack, who was separated from his wife. His belly was full of blood and the team drained it. He had to be rushed to surgery (he was an organ donor).
Soon after surgery, the wife, Rose, was rushed to the ED and she was pregnant. A scan revealed the baby was fine while mom was unconscious. Rose’s injuries were severe and she was ultimately brain dead. They couldn’t fully tell the extent of the baby’s full injuries until birth. Rose’s parents had to receive the devastating news. They were forced with the choice of leaving the child in the wound and risk the mother’s body decaying or delivering prematurely.
The family decided to prematurely deliver, however, there were complications and the baby wasn’t breathing. The baby was on life support and his condition was irreparable. The grandparents were distraught and named the boy, Tyler. After a short time, Tyler perished. The grandparents wanted to donate his organs as his parents did.
The parents’ organs helped save twelve lives, Blake had performed them all. Tyler’s intestines were planned for Kayla. Marcel approached Blake and pleaded to lead the surgery and she allowed him.
Kayla’s surgery went very well and she was expected to make a full recovery. Tyler’s grandparents want to meet Kayla’s parents and they all embraced each other as family.
Welcome Back Dr. Asher
Later on, Blake asked Marcel about the significance of the surgery and he lost a child too early… the case struck home for him. Charles met with Loni for a date. Taylor and Shentu went on a date too!
Goodwin asked Archer to meet someone. It was Dr. Hannah Asher (portrayed by Jessy Schram). He bluntly asked about her addiction and she had been sober for two years. Goodwin welcomed Dr. Asher back to Chicago Med!
