Warning… Spoilers below!

On Chicago Fire Season 10 Episode 18, Boden finds himself held hostage in a grocery store.

The Day Turned Upside Down

Severide tells Boden that he’s grilling some brisket. Boden is thrilled, and tells Severide he’s headed to the store, but will be back by lunch.

At the store, tracks down some seasoning. While glancing through them, Boden hears sirens and a loud crash, to see that a car has crashed into the building.

Boden watches from behind an aisle as the driver stumbles out of the car and shoots at the police. When the driver takes a few customers hostage, Boden stays hidden, and sees three more people hiding as well.

Back at the firehouse, Violet apologizes to Gallo for assuming he exposed her relationship with Chief Hawkins and repairs their relationship.

The firefighters watch the news report on the incident at the grocery store. The ambulance gets called out to the location, and Severide spots Boden’s car in the parking lot on the TV.

Violet and Emma arrive, and Severide calls to ask if Boden is there. When Violet sees Boden’s car in the lot, Severide sends the rest of Firehouse 51 out to help.

Stepping Out

Boden comes out from the aisle, and the man orders Boden to join the hostages. Boden notices that he’s hurt, and tells the man that he needs medical attention. When one of the workers being held hostage recommends getting bandages from aisle 3, the man sends a mother to get him bandages, or he’ll shoot her daughter. While she’s looking in the aisles, she finds another woman unconscious with her leg twisted at an impossible angle.

Boden tells the man that the unconscious woman is alive, but may have internal injuries.

The police tell the man to surrender, saying they know that his name is Will. Will threatens to start killing people if the police aren’t gone in 15 minutes.

Boden braces the woman, Becky’s, leg. Boden tells Will that Becky needs help, and advises him to release a hostage as a show of good faith.

Will reveals that he escaped from jail and refuses to go back. One of the hostages is a retired lawyer. Will tells them that he was arrested for armed robbery and aggravated assault, even though he was just the lookout. Then, when he was in prison, he got jumped. He escaped while he was being transferred.

The lawyer tells Will that the max he could serve is two years, maybe less, unless somebody dies in that store. Him and Boden tell Will that they can get him a deal. Will agrees, letting a worker take Becky outside to get medical help.

So Close, Yet So Far

Boden sees one of the customers still hiding make a run for it out the back, and tells Will to shout out to the police. Boden shakes his head at the other two people hiding, silently telling them to stay put, but a man gets scared and runs. He crashes into a trash can and topples it over, giving away their location to Will, who is not happy.

Boden steps in between the gun and the man who fell. Will changes his mind, telling Boden to take Becky outside. Will knows that Boden wouldn’t leave until everyone was safe.

When Will sends Boden to make sure the store is empty, Boden finds even more people hiding in the back, and advises them to stay where they are. Boden tells them he’ll try and come back for them.

Boden goes back and tells Will that the store is empty, and that he still should give the police a hostage to show good faith. Will changes his mind again, and sends the lawyer to help Becky out. The lawyer asks Will for a dollar, and when Will hands one over, he becomes Will’s lawyer.

While Will is busy making room for Becky, Boden takes the opportunity to update the team about the situation over the walkie. He asks them to try and get the back doors open, but quietly.

Right as the lawyer and Becky are about to pass through the opening, Boden calls out, alerting them that glass is about to fall on them. It narrowly misses them, and the cops take the opportunity to send the SWAT team in. But Boden calls them off, saying they’re all fine.

Becky and the lawyer make it out. Boden tries to reassure Will and convince him to let more hostages go, but Will just wants some time to think.

Time is Ticking

Severide and the team try to come up with a way to open the back doors. Severide heads to the roof, where he finds a skylight.

Meanwhile, Will sets his gun down for a moment to eat a bag of chips. Boden starts talking to Will about his life and his family. When Boden says that he can see them in a couple years, Will refuses to go back to prison, and says he’ll be better off if he just shoots himself.

To cause a distraction, the team sets off their sirens to cover up the noise of squad sawing through the skylight. When the customers hiding in the back try to move a table to reach the skylight better, they make noise, alerting Will out front. Boden covers for the noise, saying it was his walkie.

The lawyer, Bob, talks to Will on the walkie, saying that he’s negotiated a plea deal if Will surrenders without hurting anybody else. Bob tells Will to surrender and go outside, that the police won’t hurt him. Will eventually agrees to it, but seconds after that, one of the hostages notices something. When Will and Boden head over, they see it’s a dead man.

No Other Choice

Will realizes that it’s over for him, but Boden said that the man died from friendly fire, not Will. But Will thinks that he’s going to get charged anyway.

While anxiously pacing, Will catches a glimpse of hostages being carried up by squad members through the door. Boden apologizes to Will for lying to him, saying he was only doing his duty.

Will begins to head outside, but Boden steps in front of him. Boden tries to remind Will of his family, and encourages him to turn his life around. But Will doesn’t listen, and he walks outside with his gun. Right as Will lifts the gun, Boden tackles him to the ground. The members of Firehouse 51 gather around Boden and Will, telling the police not to shoot.

Once Will is in the cop car, Boden tells the cops that he’ll testify that the man inside wasn’t killed by Will.

Who’s The New Girl

As they’re heading home, Emma tells Violet it’d be cool to stay at Firehouse 51, but Violet assures her that Brett will be back in a month. Ritter overhears this, and informs Gallo that he found out that Emma lied about the school she went to. They both know something is off with her, they just don’t know what.

Guilt

When Herrmann, Kidd, and Severide check in on Boden, he reveals he feels guilty for not seeing the dead man the whole time that he was there. He won’t ever know if the man died instantly or if there was a chance to save him.

Herrmann reminds Boden that he saved so many people, including Will. Still, Boden’s eyes carry so much weight…
