Bianca Shaw is a singer/songwriter from the west side of Chicago. In a musical career that began as a rapper aged 11, Bianca managed to navigate the music industry on her terms and stay true to her art.

As she began to blow up, the words of praise soon followed. Kenneth Bennett, better known as the father of Chance The Rapper, described her music as “the cheapest flight you’ll catch to paradise.” On reflection, he does have a point.
Bianca has amassed an impressive list of appearances: Sway in the Morning, Rolling Stone, and even Good Morning America. Much in the same way, her musical connections have prospered too. She has collaborated with some of the biggest names: Taylor Bennett, Twista, and Chance The Rapper.

The success has resonated with the industry. Her first EP managed to hit Billboard, and she even obtained an exclusive streaming deal on Soundcloud. With so much already under her belt—Bianca’s latest project, Get a Real Job, promises much.
We spoke with Bianca to find out more about the woman behind the artist.
“My mom used to sing in a church choir. We grew up like that. We used to make up Christian rap songs.”
According to Bianca, music was firmly in her blood. She wrote her first rap song at the age of 11, which gave her an insight into the power of music. When speaking on the song, she looked back at it with many fond memories. She remarked: “I performed it at the summer school/summer camp, and those kids were going crazy.”

Those humble beginnings inspired her sophomore album: Get a Real Job. The title was seen as an ode to the industry and other artists looking to work outside major record labels. As an independent artist, Bianca hoped this project would be an “inspiration for other entrepreneurs and other artists” to keep pushing. She hoped to be a “beacon of light…and let [artists] know that…we just have to find a niche, and we have to keep going.”
Being a female within the industry has added further pressure. She was very frank about how women have to “speak up at the table.” But with that comes the realization that not everyone is going to be receptive to your music. And yet, for any budding artists out there, Bianca had this to say: “Keep your insecurities in check.”
That very message became an anthem for her favorite single, “Lightning.” The lyrics, “I just wanna get away from everything, a whole new energy,” symbolizes the positivity running through her music. And she has encouraged other artists to follow this approach when forging their connections in the industry. “Lightning is about drowning out the negativity that you hear and just holding the people you believe in close,” she said.
One of her inspirations was Missy Elliot. The rapper, in her own right, turned heads with the boldness of her track: “Get Ur Freak On.” That energy and single-mindedness have inspired Bianca to double down on her beliefs. Bianca spoke on how Missy Elliot “went against the grain, and I like that. I feel like I go against the grain too.”
The sky’s the limit, as Bianca has plenty more in store for her fans. She plans on breaking into other mainstream shows and set her sights on securing a spot on a BET Freestyle.
