In the present, we learn what happened during that phone call between Kim and Gene. Afterward, Kim flew to Albuquerque to turn herself in for her involvement in Howard’s murder. But without a body and evidence, the DA decided not to pursue the case. Kim exposed the truth to Cheryl, Howard’s widow.

Gene returned to the cancer victim’s home to rob him of the financial information needed to swindle him and nearly got caught. Jeff caused a diversion with the police, which got him arrested. When Gene tried to convince his mother, Marion, to bail him out, he slipped up, and she got suspicious. She found out he was really Saul Goodman from Albuquerque and ratted him out. Gene fled…

Warning… Better Call Saul spoilers are below!

On Better Call Saul Season 6 Episode 13 Finale, we flashed back to the scene when Jimmy and Mike transverse the desert with $7 million of Lalo Salamonca’s bail money. Passing the Suzuki Esteem the duo pushed over a cliff, Jimmy proposed they take off with the money, and Mike disagreed.

They had a hypothetical discussion of what they would do with their halves of the money if they had a time machine. Mike would go back to the first day he took a bribe and move forward. Jimmy would go back to the day Warren Buffet took over Berkshire Hathaway‎, dump $6 million into the stock, zap back to that time in the future and be a billionaire… or a trillionaire! Mike’s smug look of disbelief that he would only think of money told him everything he needed to know about Jimmy’s morals…

Saul Busted

Gene is on the run on Better Call Saul Season 6 Episode 13 Finale

As Gene bailed, Marion ratted him out. Gene rushed home to grab hidden cash, diamonds, and a burner phone and overheard police chatter about himself on the scanner he kept nearby. He hopped out the back window and ran on foot, fearing a police chopper overhead. His escape route was littered with cops, so he hopped inside and garbage dumpster.

While inside, he pulled the card for the Best Quality Vacuum Repair extractor and recited, “Hoover Max Extract Pressure Pro Model 60, Hoover Pressure Pro Max Extract Model 60!” We fumbled with the box and spilled the jewels. After recovering a few stones, he attempted to call, yet the police found him and arrested him!

While at the station, the police viewed his cheese “Better Call Saul” television commercials in dismay. For his one phone call, he ironically called into Cinnabon to tell them they needed a new manager. Gene made another call to Bill Oakley (Portrayed by Peter Diseth) with an opportunity to defend him since he flipped from being a prosecutor to a defender. Gene still had hope he would end on top of this situation…

He was hit with everything from money laundering, to R.I.C.O., to conspiracy to murder. They offered life in prison plus 190 years! Oddly, Jimmy/Saul/Gene asked that Agent Hank Schrader’s widow, Marie Schrader (portrayed by Betsy Brandt), be present. She guilted his actions were motivated by money. He claimed to be a victim of his situation and described the first time he met Walter White- being kidnapped and scared in the desert. Even the mastermind plan when Walter managed the murder of several prisoners in different locations. He told her he was in fear of his life of Mr. Heisenberg, hence why he ran. (And Jessie Pinkman was still on the loose, a la El Camino.)

The Feds were in disbelief that a jury would buy his sob story. All Saul needed was one to be in doubt. Plus, Bill Oakley has never lost a case as a defender. Marie was livid at the hint that the Feds would offer a deal in fear that they could lose the case to a mistrial…

Saul Wheels & Deals

After hours and hours of negotiations, Jimmy managed to get his sentence reduced to 7 years at the FCI prison in North Carolina, in the D-wing, to be exact. (It’s a golf resort of a prison. The same one Bernie Madoff served at.) He even offered Howard Hanlin’s murder to sweeten the deal but learned that Kim had spilled her guts on the record a month prior. He was salty she had and quickly took the reduced offer.

Saul Regrets

We flashed back to the time when Walter White (portrayed by Bryan Cranston) and Saul were locked in a basement together. Walter was annoyed by the clicking sound from the heater and attempted to repair it. Saul asked him a hypothetical question of what he would do if he had a time machine. Mr. White read through the lines and asked what regrets he would repair in his life.

Walter explained the time when he started a company and stepped away (though he was weaseled out of the company). They made billions after him. Saul only saw the dollar signs in lawsuits had he been given the case. When it was Saul’s turn, Jimmy would take back the time he got injured, attempting his first “Slipping Jimmy” routine at the age of twenty. Walter’s disappointment let him know he was always like that.

Flash forward, Gene was on a plane to prison and spoke with his lawyer for some insight into Kim’s confession. Bill advised that Cheryl Hamlin can and will sue Kim as payback. He offered more dirt, which could possibly hem Kim up…

Kim left work early to volunteer at a pro bono law firm. Suzanne Ericsen (portrayed by Julie R. Pearl) called Kim to warn her that Jimmy was giving testimony that would affect her.

Saul was arraigned to court in Albuquerque sporting a shiny suit. Kim, along with Hank Schrader and Steve Gomez’s widow, was in attendance. Saul chose to represent himself while Bill Oakley assisted. The judge was in awe at the lenient sentencing. Saul started with the sob story but redirected and contradicted his plea agreement. Despite Oakley’s advice, he proceeded to derail his deal because he wanted Kim to hear him finally confess the truth. He confessed to being complicit in Walter White’s crimes!

“The fact is, Walter White couldn’t have done it without me!” -Saul Goodman

Jimmy even confessed to causing his brother to kill himself by taking away the thing he loved the most… the law.

If Only Seven Years

In a flashback, Jimmy visited Chuck McGill (portrayed by Michael McKean) at his darkened home. They briefly chatted about changing their pasts. Jimmy was recognized as Saul Goodman on the prisoner export, and the word traveled fast. The inmates even made a chant of it. Jimmy was back to baking in prison and received a visit from Kim.

Her New Mexico BAR association card didn’t expire, so she got in as a lawyer. They had a smoke and marveled at the fact that he negotiated the government down to only 7 years. He’s now facing 86 years in prison! When Kim left, Jimmy gave her the two-shooter gesture that only Saul Goodman could give…
