Actor Karon Joseph Riley Discusses New Movie ‘Coins For Love’

Karon Joseph Riley was interviewed on the Celebrity Myxer recently. The Saints & Sinners star opens up about his role on TV One’s upcoming Coins For Love film which premieres Sunday, July 19th, at 8 pm CT. Watch the interview above or dive into the editorial below…

Karon describes Coins For Love as a continuation of the hit film Coins For Christmas. “It’s a story about love, and relationships, the good side of them, the bad side of them, and everything that happens in between,” explains Riley. He portrays Jake, the Ex-husband of lead protagonist Madison (who is portrayed by Essence Atkins.)

Madison and Jake have a hard talk about his lack of parenting responsibilities.

The couple shares two teenage children. In the previous film, Jake showed that he was physically there but not reliable. In the upcoming movie, he’s trying to make his way back to Madison’s heart. However, she has found interest in a new boo. Though the new beau’s Ex is also trying to come back. Or as her character states it, “Back? I Never Left.” This pot is boiling for an interesting plot of drama!

When I spoke with Karon about this role, I asked does his own past relationship experiences reflect in the film. He answered, “Jake is basically like me. He’s going after his goals and dreams but unlike me he’s irresponsible.” The Ex-football player further jokes, “it was fun to see what that was like for a few weeks.” Though in all seriousness he follows up and explains that like himself when he played football, he was singularly focused on the game. Now his family comes first, then his career.

Riley also spoke about this role on Bounce Television’s Saints & Sinners drama show. He witted, “Malik is rich, smart, and handsome… that sounds like me all day!” He also noted the contrast in the character’s motivation is ill-willed. Citing the old adage, that you can have all the money in the world but can sell your soul. Adding, “what good do you profit?” You can see the character’s struggle in his constant struggle with friends, family, and foes.

Karon told us he has always wanted to be an actor. Since first grade, he has aspired to act. He even secured a role in a Puss in Boots play. As he got older, sports came about. Play professional ball taught him work ethic. He planned to create a huge name in sports to make an easier segue into acting- as the latter was always his ultimate goal. Kudos to him, because he is living his dream!

Look out for a few upcoming projects. Such as a pilot movie he wrote for himself called “The Fellas.” He’s also starring in another movie called “We are Winners” releasing sometime in the fourth quarter. Additionally, he’s authoring a book called “Man Laws: My Two Cents To A Young Black Brother” set to drop Q4 as well.

Riley wants viewers of the film to take away a story of drama, navigating Exes while trying to blossom new love relationships, humorous moments, and most importantly to be inspired by seeing more Black stories on television.
