On 9-1-1 Season 5 Episode 12, we flashback to the day Maddie left her goodbye video for Chimney. Maddie veered deeper into depression, even reaching the point of being suicidal. She checked herself into a rehab facility in Boston after abruptly leaving her family due to postpartum depression. She felt unfit as a mother when she bathed her daughter and nearly drowned her in the tub.

Not Ready Yet

She discussed the deep-rooted pain her family experienced when her brother died at a young age. The clinic found an issue with her thyroids which caused her depression. She was progressing well enough to transfer to a women’s mental health center. Maddie came to that hospital because she used to train there when she studied as a nurse years ago.

Maddie met a friend, Kira (portrayed by A.J. Cook, Criminal Minds), who had a similar issue (dealing with an abusive ex) and felt inadequate for putting their children in danger. So they made a pact to be there for each other. Soon, she got an apartment and attended group sessions. She watched a video of her daughter that Chimney had emailed. She called her brother, Buck, asking why Chimney was in Utah. He explained that Chimney was searching for her there. He wanted to come get her though she wasn’t ready to return home…

Chimney has been on a relentless search for Maddie. Buck told Chimney that Maddie was in Boston so he was on a cross-country quest. He crashed with a firefighter buddy, Eli, in Beantown. He eventually found the women’s clinic Maddie attended yet it was after hours. The next day, Eli advised him that it wasn’t wise to stay in his basement indefinitely with an infant. However, he did try to help by offering him a temporary job an as EMT.

St. Maddy’s Day

At a breakfast prayer in a church, a brawl broke out (beer was being served and the men were out of control). A bagpipe player took a tumble and fainted. The EMTs were too far out and Chimney and his partner were just across the street working the parade. It turns out, the man’s bagpipes were filled with fungus on the inside which caused him health issues. Had he continued, he would have died from the toxic air. Chimney was in for more craziness from the drunken day…

Maddie’s friend tanked at the next session, getting drunk, and tried to guilt her for getting well enough to leave. Maddie decided to take her friend to the hospital and they noticed her poster plastered on the bulletin board. Her friend called her out for being a liar (since they seemed to bond over an abusive ex). Kira stormed out and Maddie gave chase.

While working the parade, a drunken man walked in front of an ax-throwing target and taking the weapon to the back of the head! Chimney and his crew were able to stabilize the man for transport. Meanwhile, Maddie got a call to a bar to pick up Kira, however, she started aspirating and fainted. When the EMT arrived it was Chimney and his team. They were both there shocked to see each other!

Healed

Kira suffered from alcohol poisoning and would make it due to Maddie’s fast-acting. Eli spoke with Maddie and told her how much of a wreck Chimney was when he got to Boston. However, his drive was her and their daughter.

Maddie then spoke to Chimney about her state of mind and how she tried to drown herself. She also explained how coming to Boston healed her and deeply apologized for what she put her family through. He apologized for missing the warning signs. They both vowed to communicate their honest feelings moving forward. He took her to see Gia, however, she was hesitant to pick her up saying she was a stranger to her babe. Chimney reassured her that was never the case…

Mama!

Later on, Chimney and Eli had a candid talk about the entire situation over some cold brews. Eli made him realize that helping people is how he helps himself. Meanwhile, Maddie visited Kira in the hospital and the woman was happy Maddie was well enough to help her at a low point. Kira encouraged her to move forward with her life.

Chimney took Gia to see Maddie, however, the baby was upset and crying. Maddie decided to sing a lullaby to her and called her, “Mama!” Maddie was shocked she remembered her mother. Maddie was finally ready to go home…
